A monarch willing to kill his own people to save his skin By Justin Huggler in Kathmandu Published: 21 April 2006 Tens of thousands of the people he rules over lined the streets calling for his death yesterday and he has been condemned the world over. But hidden away in his palace in the midst of a city in chaos, King Gyanendra of Nepal appeared desperate to cling to power - and prepared to shoot down his own unarmed subjects in the streets to do it. The US ambassador warned this week that if he does not give up his autocratic powers, Gyanendra will end up fleeing Kathmandu clinging to a helicopter. The Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, is said to have lost patience with him. But then, Gyanendra does not just believe in the divine right of kings. He believes he is a living god himself. According to Nepali Hindu tradition, the king is an incarnation of Vishnu. All his life has been devoted to preserving the monarchy's power - even though for much of it, he did not expect to become king. Gyanendra was thrust on to the throne in 2001, after his brother King Birendra and almost the entire male line of the Royal Family were wiped out in a palace massacre. From the start, he was a deeply unpopular monarch. There were riots in the streets of Kathmandu at his coronation, and almost immediately he began dismantling the hard-won democratic reforms his brother had granted. That process culminated in February last year, when Gyanendra sacked the entire government and seized back the absolute powers of a medieval king, suspending basic human rights, including free speech and freedom of thought. It came as a surprise to nobody in Nepal. Even as a child, Gyanendra was convinced he was different. While he was at school in India, he was asked to present a flower to the Indian Prime Minister at the time, Jawaharlal Nehru. He refused, saying: "I am higher than he." The official version of the massacre that brought him to the throne in 2001 - the version accepted by Western diplomats and the Nepali establishment - is that the Crown Prince, Dipendra, shot dead most of the Royal Family in a drunken rage, before turning the gun on himself. But on the streets of Kathmandu the people have always believed that Gyanendra somehow orchestrated the massacre to win the throne for himself - a belief that has been fuelled by the fact that almost the only male survivors were Gyanendra and his son, Paras. When he seized power last year, Gyanendra said it was necessary to defeat the Maoist rebels who have waged a 10-year civil war for control of Nepal. But events have moved beyond the king's control since then. He failed to make any military headway against the Maoists, and today they are openly allied to the democratic opposition parties. The Maoists and the parties have proposed peace talks. The protests began several months ago with calls for Gyanendra to restore democracy and revert to being a constitutional monarch. But now those calls have turned into demands for the monarchy to be abolished altogether. A king who has spent his life trying to preserve the monarchy may be on the verge of destroying it. History will not forget this scene. And Parties must not forget to celebrate these brave people as the martyre of people's movement - JANANDOLAN- for Republic Democracy through the reenstate of the disolve parliament to have the national assembly election for the new constitution and keep or kick-out the king from Nepal. Shah and Rana and their puppets in Army and Police have done to people these sort of killing and astrocities since the dawn of Shah regime. Shah and Rana have never let Nepali people to have basic human right with freedom. I live in America and I used ask police officers who have came to USA the question - 'Did you think different from ordinary people being a police officer in Nepal as the part of HMG thus treat people as lower grade or second citizen' Most of them said yes because they were tought to treat people that way to protect the interest of HM.

the truth is, gyane still has the upper hand. regardless of how much people clamor for his departure, the worst that can happen for gyane right now is constitutional monarchy. mark my words. but these palace people can be quite devious. even if the army is under the control of the pm as per the new constitution, their loyalty will always be to the crown. so shit can still hit the fan 10 yrs after this all is over...

ZAMIL SINGH THAT'S TRUE. BUT NOW THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT IS TO ESTABLISH ABSOLUTE DEMOCRACY BY HAVE THE ELECTION FOR THE CONSTITUTINAL ASSEMBLY. NO MATTER WHAT KING OF PM GYANE APPOINTS THE FINAL OBJECTIVE IS THE ELECTIONAL OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY IN THE BALLET NEPALI PEOPLE WILL HAVE CHOICE TO KEEP THE KING OR KICK HIM OUT. PEOPLE OF NEPAL AND PARTIES, INDIA AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES WILL NOT AGREE WITHOUT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTION FOR NEPALI PEOPLE TO DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT. WITHOUT THAT THERE WILL BE NO COMPLETE DEMOCRACY AND THEREAFTER THE CONFLICT WILL EXIST AGAIN TO FINISH THE RESIDUE. BUT WE HAVE TO FINISH ALL NOW AND I THINK PARTY LEADERS AND CIVIL SOCIETY ARE VERY AWARE OF THE CONSEQUENCES

It's not only this Maharaj... even Sujata Koirala and her father and her party leaders seems to have subscribed to killing own people: Sujata Koirala, head of the foreign department for the opposition Nepali National Congress, said the King’s measures would not deter the protesters. “The suppression will get worse because we’re not going to stop our demands. We don’t want it, but more people will die,” she told The Times. - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,25689-2144226_2,00.html This is what that bitch thinks... she and her father and her party expect more people to die so that they can get into POWER. And that's how these netas look at Nepalese people, as if people are their slaves and thos eslaves should die for them.... WHAT the F***CK is this??????? CMON???????

Details of one among them is already in media. He is Basu Ghimire, 22 yrs, from Hetauda, who had a small business there in Kalanki. About two others, INSEC or Model hospital may have some knowledge.
