Bringing a spouse with a green card
I've had a US green card since the past 3 years and would like to travel to Nepal, get married and bring my spouse here. Does anyone here know how long t usually takes to bring a spouse here if you have a green card? Anyone have recent experiences?
Thanks.
Not More then 3 and half year. That will be 42 months or about 1260 Hours or about 75600 min or about 4536000 . Hope You will have clear idea now...
Cheers
The best way to avoid complication is to follow my opinion:
Ask your parents to make a list of illegable girls you can marry. After two years when you are qualified for citizenship then pick your mellon and bring her home.
Trust me you will be happy that way.
That is about 4536000 second...
Have a lovely weeding babal
If you really wnat to brign your wife here in the US. Do not marry yet, Bring her as financee that would be gurantee that she will get visa and it will get about 4-6 months for all the paper works if you do by land mail.
Don't marry while u have green card it takes ages. I am waiting for last 3 years still no where. Just wait till u get ur us citizen. One you married she can't get any kind of visa at all.l she has to wait til INS approved and wait for NVC visa avilable number. right now family visa mumber is jan 15/05 and you do the math if you marry now.
Thanks everyone. For family reasons, I am compelled to get married within the next few months, otherwise I would wait for my US citizenship. Btw, how quick - from the date of filing a petition - can one bring his/her spouse once he/she becomes a US citizen? Can anyone give me a rough estimate.
Dalli, the fiancee visa sounds interesting. Once she gets a fiancee visa, will she be able to work in the US? How long after she arrives in the US can she get a green card? Oh and could you explain about the '4-6 months for all the paperworks' you mentioned?
Will it be helpful if she comes as a regular F-1 student and then we get married here in the US? How long before she can get a greencard that way?
Thanks again.
Fiancee visa worked for me, There are few things that you have to present in the US embassy such as your photos together as a proof that you guys know each other, letters or emails and mostly your financial details earning etc...
Well, it much cheaper to get financee visa and if both party do their best with the paper work it should not take so much.
After all it is your fundamental right to marry any person on earth so there is no way that they can deny visa as long as all the documents are on the right place.
you will have to marry within three months after she gets here and after you marry, they will issue her s.s. number where it will says that she can work.
You must be a US citizen to bring your spouse to U.S throush Fiancee VISA..
Who is Eligible
U.S. citizens who will be getting married to a foreign national in the United States may petition for a fiancé(e) classification (K-1) for their fiancé(e). You and your fiancé(e) must be free to marry. This means that both of you are unmarried, or that any previous marriages have ended through divorce, annulment or death. You must also have met with your fiancé(e) in person within the last two years before filing for the fiancé(e) visa. This requirement can be waived only if meeting your fiancé(e) in person would violate long-established customs, or if meeting your fiancé(e) would create extreme hardship for you. You and your fiancé(e) must marry within 90 days of your fiancé(e) entering the United States.
You may also apply to bring your fiancé(e)'s unmarried children, who are under age 21, to the United States.
Give me ur GREEN CARD- I will go back home and marry for you and bring her here... Trust me in this - No pun intended....
Hopefully I will find twins and marry both, hope they will let me bring them both - u can take one then...
Kooldude, looks like you're right. The para you pasted appears to be from the USCIS website below:

which concerns me. Dalli, what's the scoop here? Were you/your spouse a US citizen when one of you migrated from Nepal on fiancee visa?
My husband is US citizen and I came here as a fiancee. I did not know that this applies only for the US citizens. Sorry babal.
Looks like I am stuck for the next two years :(
Unless, you have given words to someone back in Nepal, why don't you search your bride here...?
babaal,
marrying in nepal while you have a green card is indeed a problem. the best possible way for you to bring your spouse over here is ask her to apply for a non-immigrant visa like F-1. there has been lots of noise regarding lack of facilities for married green card holders in USA and who have their other half back home. so far there has been no changes in the law. US citizens have the facility of fiance visas and H1 holders have H4 visas which allow them to bring their spouse over to the US. but there is none for green cards. you have to wait forever. in many cases, the green card holder becomes a citizen and the spouse is still languishing in nepal.
the best option is to either wait till you become a citizen or have the spouse apply for a visa (F-1) and hope for the best.
Ok..so it looks like F-1 is the way to go if I don't wanna wait until my citizenship. But once she gets here on F-1, and then we get married here, how long before she will get green card?
babaal, if she gets here on F-1 or any other visa, it'll be a lot better for you. so you might not mind the wait as change of status will happen in due course with you two being together. the only problem could be that your spouse'll have to maintain status for a while.
i think even if she gets here and as long as you are a green card holder, the time taken is about the same. it'll be a lot faster after you become a citizen.
