One thing preventing wide adoption of certain technologies is energy storage. Particularly, batteries.

Teams around the ЁЯМР are working to develop really cool batteries. Batteries that can power electric vehicles. Your phone can eventually last for 5 days on a charge.

Now read about solid state battery technology, what is it?

A Solid State Battery is a rechargeable battery technology which uses solids as electrolytes as opposed to liquids/gels in a conventional Lithium Ion Battery (LIB).

Why solid state battery technology?
They are expected to be better than Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) in the following:

Greater storage capacity
Very little probability of exploding
Faster charge time
Greater energy densities
Cheaper
All these are a result of a simpler design and the use of certain solids as electrolytes. Solid state batteries are projected to eventual replace LIBs completely by 2030.

LIBs are limited due to certain reasons:

Their electrolytes are combustible, especialy when exposed to humid air. A case of this was seen in the Samsung Note 7 due to poor design.
They develop internal structures called dendrites which limit their efficiency over time. They charge for longer while storing less energy.
They are mainly 2 dimensional, limiting the travel distances of lithium ions.
Energy Density
The Energy Density of a battery is energy stored by a battery per unit volume. It can be viewed as a way of comparing different batteries. Generally, LIBs have lesser energy densities than their solid state counterparts.
