Tax difference between two states
Hey guys,
Plz help if you have been through the same or have any idea about it.
I am an F1 working as a GA in a uni. I recently got married and my wife is here on F2. When filing for tax, should I go with single or married as my status changed in the middle of the year. Also, what changes should I expect in my return amount with change in status?
Thanks in advance!
You will get most return with married filing jointly but since your wife is in F2, she probably won't have SSN. So you need to file ITIN number for her then you can filing Married filing jointly.
@Sajhamitra: Thanks for the info. I did not know about the ITIN for F2. Do you happen to know how to get that?
@SRV44,
You need to file W7 to get ITIN. Here is the link.

You need to file W7 along with your 1040. IRS will generate ITIN for your wife and then process your 1040.
