From my understanding, there are very little companies that hire security consultants. Most of the security jobs also require some level of security clearance.

Entry level is your best chance but then again if you are on OPT it will be very hard to get into because most of the security companies do not have desi population thus not aware of sponsorship issues and mostly will be unwilling to do it.

Also security + is a very entry-level certification. You will need some sort of specific Vendor certification like Cisco / PAN / Juniper to the name the few. Security is a very big world, its like when you are trying to get into programming you will need to know specific languages and their frameworks.

Infrastructure, however, I believe are easier to get into as I see a lot of desis that work on it.

@fdpower, thanks for the response, well I'm a permanent resident and also worked as a python programmer for few years and now really trying hard to get into cyber security. The key thing here is I applied for entry level all over US except Alaska and Hawaii and still not a single phone interview that is why I was looking for desi consultancy......I'm just trying to bend my finger to get a taste of butter cause a straight finger isn't working......well it works for some other things tho !

If you have an active TS/SCI clearance, my agency is hiring system admins.

yeah, if you have a clearance, you will easily get a Help Desk (employee like to call it Sys Admin) jobs easily without even an experience. The starting salary will be 65-70K. Cybersecurity is tough to get but the best part is it pays at least 20% more than other technical jobs.

Binaya, if you have a GC then you will get some level of security clearance. I recommend getting some popular certification. I would start with CCNA even though everyone hates cisco.

Then after move on to something enterprise level product. routing switching is something I don't like at all so I don't suggest that at all but CCNA will give you all the fundamentals you will need.
--- If you want to get into real security security then start on getting you CEH cert ...its actually a fun cert. Then after you can move on to many other stuff such as Malware analysis, Firewall engineer , IPS , IDS , Proxy etc. If you do get into Firewalls , start with a simple linux firewall and move up to a enterprise grade firewall such as a SRX , ASA ,NSX, PAN or checkpoint. You will need linux everywhere so the basics of bash is extremely important everywhere.

-- Know how to run a packet capture and how to analyze one in wire shark. Remember packet traverses through all OSI layers. You have to know TCP handshakes and how it behaves. Movin up learn how https and most importantly https works (ciphers / ssl certificates / authentication ) etc.

Lastly i would say that security nowadays is essentially an infrastructure, automation is inevitable so secOPS concepts such as docker / ansible / puppet/ openstack  / AWS  etc are the future.

@looser.
Your spelling is funny. I don't know what that means. Are you trying to spell "loser"? If so, that makes sense.

And, yes I do have TS/SCI. Can you help me? I am in TPS status.

Ha ha ha @nepal12345678 bro le. Malai call nikai authyo, ajai ni help desk mai gari rachhu. Ke garne help desk bhanda mathi jane buddhi/padhai chaina.

I mean a lot of people work as an entry-level help desk but at outside the job, they like to call themselves as Sysadmin.
