Civil Engineering for the long run.

You know what you learned in civil engr is not going to change for the most part. The same knowledge and experience, you can use it until you retire. You cannot say the same about IT. There's new system/database/programming language coming every year. You have to constantly update yourself, otherwise your knowledge will be obsolete (there are exceptions of course). If a field has a very low barrier of entry, then the field will have a low threshold for exit also.

Having said that, I have to say that if you are into core functions, such as coding/programming/network engineering etc, then the skill is very transferable. Once a programmer, always a programmer.

@nepalibudho : inspiring. i am seeing myself in similar footstep like yours. i am not sure about 150k part though lol. can i ask what field of IT you in? JAVA, DAtabase something else? i am thinking for SAS clinical/Financial . but i am not sure . i am in dilemma, whether to start with BA/QA to get foot in door or take not so easy route of little complex ones.

@badhijanne . Thanks for the input. you are right that skill in civil gets valued as my career progresses. but my end plan is not to get stuck in 9-5 job or excel in current field . To be honest my choice of civil as my major was "value of profession" and "job prospect" . i was wrong with job prospect part since the compensation is not that awesome looking at the hard work we put throughout college.

Why did you say you are not sure on 150K. I have seen people making more than that with the same amount of experience like mine.
I am in .NET development. For your info, I started doing .NET since it came out.

Pros: If you are in DC area in Govt contract position. 150K is easy with > 10 years of experience. Probably it is down the road for you.
Cons: You need to be a US citizen with Secret Clearance.

I am currently in the same boat with mechanical degree. Thinking of joining computer science for masters and starting a career in IT. Anyone who can suggest?
Personally for me, I always wanted to be a programmer but don't really know how I ended up with ME degree. Currently, working since last year and hate the job.
