I did that. I changed from B.S. Engineering to M.S. Computer Science. It took me almost 3 years without taking any summer break. It was in 1998. I am old now.

Don't think the age is an issue bro..when I was in 8bth grade 7th grades used to tell me I was old. When I was at 10th grade I was the oldest in the school.when I was I high-school I felt I was really old and college,mba,2nd masters I felt ancient .all this time I was under 30. Don't compare yourself and just so it. Life after 30 just flies because most of the time ur stuck in a monotonous life.soon you will be close to 40.just do it.39 is very young. I would trade 20 yrs of my life to be 30 again.

@lomanthang: don't make a mockery of my life bro. started career at 37 (yes 37) and you are talking about switching careers. on the bright side, well on my way to complete financial independence at 45. house and all. so there's that. life sometimes deals you a bad hand. i would evaluate if IT is what you want to eat, live and breathe. are you willing to learn things all night? do you get excited when a for loop works? do you get the rush when the alert box comes through? go to a career that you enjoy each day. if that is the case, you will succeed. if this switch is based around loose hearsay - 'well, if he can do it, so can i, and the money is good' rethink your career switch.

best of luck!

@ghogay_moro- Appreciate your input. I am not trying to switch profession with a ego or just financial safetynet. I am making decent money right now but I want to do something for which i at least can motivate myself for part of a day. I don't have enough experiences in other industry to decide i am okay with struggling for a while. Good for you bro, sounds like you are in a good place now. I at least want to give a shot to try something which i could at least get excited to go to work. I know there will be people talking about family and sustainability so lot would suggest to keep on doing what i do and which is essentially be miserable. At this point of my life, i want to try few different things before diving in something, who knows i could continue with my current profession.

@lomanthang - Nope, got laid off and then decided to change career. Since I didn't wanted to go back to school again, enrolled into online trainings, got certifications, and build several business applications at home just to practice. My problem back then was how to crack an interview. So I created a resume with xyz name, and then applied all over the country and started facing interviews, and when I thot I'm confident, I started applying for junior positions in my town. Eventually, started off as a junior programmer in 2011.

I switched my career when I was 34. I worked as an Electrical Engineer for 7 yrs back in Nepal. Came to USA for MS. Graduated in 2009 which was very bad time and started working in one company as an Engineer in OPT. After working 10 months company decided not to sponsor new H1B candidate, so had to leave that job. No one was ready to sponsor H1B, So decided to join consultancy and extend my OPT. Took the BA training but did not like it. Again took Java Programming and started working from end of 2010. Now I am working as a Team lead. I had zero Java Programming knowledge but had C-Programming knowledge. Which is almost nothing. So age doesn't matter to switch your career..

Good Luck!!

Hi tic_tac,
What is the salary range for team lead with that many years of experience? In your case I guess you had 6-7 years of experience.

Thanks
