TRAVEL WITH ASYLUM BASED GREEN CARD
Hello guys, Do I have to apply for travel document in order travel or can I use my MRP Passport? I got green card through asylum but I am not travelling to my home country. travelling experience, suggestions, advice will be much appreciated!!! thanks.
Hi, I am in similar situation. I was confused about it so I called USCIS. They said you don't need travel document since you are permanent resident now. When you return, you should have valid permanent resident card.
Thank you Khoosbu. Appreciated it!! I called USCIS and they told me the same thing. Anyone else can you hare your experience here!!! thanks
I am kind of surprised, in their website they clearly say to use travel document. Do they tell you to use passport? I think it won't be any issue but if you get in trouble at POE then they will not accept answers like someone on phone at USCIS told me to use my passport, they will go by what it is in their website.
It is just my opinion so may not be correct.
You need a travel document if you don't have a passport. Most of the asylees will not have a PP from a country that they are trying to hide / run away from.
In their website, they said you "must" have RTD if you are in refugee or asylee status and you "may" have RTD if you are a permanent resident. RTD works like your identification documents. So when I asked USCIS, they said you don't fall under asylee/refugee status once you are a permanent resident. Like @fdpower mentioned, if you don't have pp from your country eventhough you are a permanent resident, then you require a RTD. As per the phone conversation with USCIS, that person told me to put down name, his/her agent id, date and time of phone conversation if asked by officers at POE.
USCIS website says: " If you hold refugee or asylee status and are not a permanent resident, you must have a refugee travel document to return to the United States." I did not find where it says you need travel document if you are LPR.
Thank you guys just making one more thing clear, is it okay to get new MRP passport and travel?
I think its okay. You are still a citizen of Nepal so you can apply for MRP and travel with that.

Under the current situation, I recommend not to travel for 90 days and wait.
If you want to take risk, good luck.
Even though USCIS website says we need TD , our MRP is fine.
Neerman is right , On this situation traveling is not highly recommended. Specially to India. Think your self, travel is not so important then your GC !!!
I think the ban is for only 7 countries only ? whats the risk? even CBP website says if you cannot get passport from your hoe country you need travel document. CAn you all share Legal and right suggestions please?
This is what CBP website says: "If you are not a U.S. citizen, you may need permission to return to the United States after traveling abroad. This permission is granted through a travel document. Travel documents are also given to people who want to travel, but cannot get a passport from their country of nationality. See Advance Parole, Reentry Permit, and Refugee Travel for more information."
It says you MAY NEED PERMISSION.
