newars/newa are a linguistic group of nepalmandal (kathmandu valley). it is not an ethnic group but an cultural and linguistic group mixed of different ethnic groups. they have tibeto-burmic and indo-gangetic mixture.
nepalbhasa or newari is basically a tibeto-burmese language with heavy indo-aryan influence. though the grammatical syntax is tibeto-burmese ,the vocabulary is largely sanskrit or prakrit based.
there is an older thread discussing about it in much detail.

This thread creator is not asking a question but trying to degrade other.  "Who is Newar" One of the most cultured and civilized people of Nepal.

Your mind is crystal clear and you know why you brought it? You think professors log in Sajha and answer you ? If that is the case you are right.

Karnali ko kun gaun bata balla jharis ra newar ko hun bhanne taha ni nabhako pakhe. But alas, I blame Nepal's social studies books and Khas people's ethno-centric soceity-viewpoint in this which has always seen all groups other than Bahun-Chhetris are somewhat 'lower' than theirs, when in reality, it is not so in certain caste-varna following nation-communities like of Newars or Maithilis/madhesis.

Newars can be anyone - Tibetan/Chinky people looking to deeply Indian-Bihari or Bengali looking to typical Pahadiya looking (like Khas Bahun/Chhetri with distinct cross of Caucasoid and Mongoloid features.) Newars are never a homogenous group as is portrayed because they are just a conglomerate group of people who happened to exist with each other for some time. During this space of time, they spoke to each other in a common tongue - Newari - which is the source that binds them together. Otherwise what else commonality they have as a single force? They are Hindus but also have Buddhists among them, their customs are different according to their caste. Shresthas (upper caste Hindus) have initial death ritual mourning period upto 13 days but for Podes (lowest caste) it is supposed to be 5. Khokana Newars don't celebrate Dashain festival, Rato Machindranath chariot festival (where the famous Bhoto is shown) is not a festival of Bhaktapur, Kathmandu people, small small differences exists like during weddings, the Bare (Shakya-Bajracharya) and Urey (Tuladhar-Tamrakar etc.) don't have elaborate Hindu rituals of kanyadan, no ghungat for bride, certain unique ornaments, etc. Heck, even Bhaktapure Newari is different from Kathmandu Newari which is what 8 kms away?

Bahun-Chhetris always tend to see Newars as a single, business minded people, often placing them as the society's Vaisya caste, but this is just years and years of deep-rooted propaganda and sheer illiteracy that they tend to ignore just to perpetuate their dominance over all others.

And another point, if you think only Newars look like both Indians and Chinese, please refer to another caste called 'Thakuris' / Khas Thakuris who are even more mixed (esp the non-Kathmanduite ones of the Far West) and also most of the Khas (Chhetris) who too look distinctly mixed. Anyone knowing their history also kindly tell.

wow, the amount in racism is so evident in the comments guys. he may have genuinely had the interest to know about newars. or he could have been a guy from terai ,or from far east. but theyway you guys went to a conclusion about him being 'the evil bahun' actually schocked me

It is not racism when one is just laying out the simple facts. To say Bahun (as in Khas Bahuns) think themselves 'better' than others you are saying is racist or false? What world do you live in?

And if that person wanted to know about Newars then that person could have very well used his precious time in googling a few things. Or if he actually genuinely cared, he could have opened a few books or hell even clicked on the Wikipedia page before taking the trouble of opening a new thread and in such belittling words poured out his dumbness.

WHO CARES
They definitely have diverse genetic pool. To understand reason behind that you have to go all the way back in history. Kathmandu used to be center of trade and wealth. So it was attacked/looted very often, from forces in the north, south, east, west you name it. And you all know what happens when those attacks happen. Many children born in the year after the attack carried those genes from different attacking soldiers. Some soldiers even settled down in Kathmandu. Thats how newars of Kathmandu got genes from tibetians, madhesis, bahun/chettris, mongols and looks like one.
I DONT KNOW WHY PEOPLE ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT RACE IN 2016. IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT PRESERVING CULTURE, I AM ALL FOR IT. LONG LIVE CULTURE OF EACH ETHNICITY.

Few years ago, a genetic survey was done on Newar of Kathmandu. Sample from 66 random Newars were taken. The y-chromosome result is give below.

C5 – 3%
H1a – 6.1%
J2a – 6.1%
J2b – 6.1%
J2b2 – 1.5%
O3a5a – 21.2%
R2 – 25.9%
R1a1 – 25.7%
R1b1 – 10.6%

O3a5a y-chromosome is found overwhelming amongst the Mongolian population of Nepal. But only 21% of Newar has this gene. Mind you that y-chromosome is a male gene. R1a1 also known as Indo-Iranian gene is overwhelming found amongst the North-Indian including Khas-arya of Nepal. Around 25% from the sample Newar has this gene. R2 is found amongst the South India. It is in around 26% of Newar. R1b1 is known as Indo-European gene found among the French, Irish and Spanish. This gene also found among the Uighurs of western China and Hajari of Afghanistan. Strikingly 10% of Newar has this gene. Other genes like J2a, J2b etc are common to Arab population. So, though linguistically Newar belong to Bhote-Burmise, the peoples are note. They are rather diverse group of people. People came to Nepal valley from different part of the world, forgot their language, culture and assimilated to the people of here became Newar. Nepal valley was a melting pot. This process has rather stopped since 250 years.

Race purification started from South Indian on Sankaracharya's era.

Hitler took it  from South Indian Brahmans and our Brahmans followed it later. Bad things spread faster as well more worst way.
