Your favorite restaurants in KTM
Planning a trip to Nepal after a long time. I am looking for recommendations on some of your favorite KTM restaurants that you have been to recently, both for momos and for "western" cuisines. I would ask my local friends except many of them aren't around.
Also, if you have any suggestions on places just outside of KTM to hangout for a day (resort, retreat centers, etc), please share.
-K
Ktm has become damn expensive, a friend of mine visited last year and he was complining abt
the price of pizza. It cost him 2500 rupees for a large size pizza. converting a 100 rs equals a dollar, itz 25 dollar if it was 70-80 rs then it would hv been more.
I am just wondering , how ppl in ktm can afford such expensive eateries given the fact they earn 30k per month average.
I usually eat street foods, they r tasty, cheap and easily accesible if yu dont consider health.
Kristen , forget western cuisine for few days and enjoy Nepali food. Eat momo , choyela, sekuwa and some nepali style food . you have been eating same food for years try some different.
Try local " khaja ghar", " chamena pasal" etc , they are tasty, worthy than those show off restaurants.
So what are some of your favorite Choyela and Sekuwa places in the city?
1. Name: Cafe De Patan
Location : Near Patan Durbar Square (You can call them up for the exact location - See website: http://www.cafedepatan.com)
Specialty: Full Newari Plate, Buff Momo (Jhol wala), Buff Choila, Chicken Choila
It also offers Hookah if you are interested.
2. Name: Red Mud Cafe
Location: Jhamshikhel (You can call them up for the exact location - See website:
Location: http://redmudcoffee.com/outlets/
3. Street tea in front of Grasshopper Cafe (Basantpur).
Resort:

Pros: Nice and quiet place outside Kathmandu valley (near Manakamana). It's a little bit pricey but worth a stay.
"5 star" momo at Patan." Honacha" is another local to try all kinda Newai foods , you will find more places to eat near Honacha. If you are in Lagankhel side try "Mahabharat Momo", meanwhile do not forget to grab "गुँडपाक" at store name sajha ( behind bus park). If you are in Durbar Sqaure of Patan you will find lot of places to eat mostly all are good. You won't regret if you try. Grab a map which displays all tourist attractions and they also includes places to eat. Usually you can get that map while entering all 3 Durbar Squares of Valley and it is free. ( I believe they all still exists) have fun!
I have recently been to Nepal couple of months ago and yes it is true that price has skyrocketed but then again I was there after many years so I had fun.
These are my favorites places:
Mezze by roadhouse : Its just opposite of the royal palace and has great view of the palace. Go there for a coffee in the afternoon.
Sam's Bar in Thamel. This has always been my favorite pub and it still is. I just enjoy the ambiance of this place.
OR2K in Thamel: Used to be pot hub back when I was in Nepal. But last time I didnt enjoy here.
La Grange in Thamel: Good for live band. It is owned by Sareen dai of Monkey Temple. Nice guy. Had fun listening to his music and talking to him.
Purple Haze in thamel: Band was good but all fuchha fuchhi audience. I felt like a grandpa there.
Tom and Jerry / Reggae bar/ Buddha bar : There were all the favs bars back then and I just revisited them all. They are still good.
For Newari foods :
Newa Suli at Harishiddi : https://www.facebook.com/pages/Harisiddhi-Newa-Suli/129255757252396
Newa lahana at Kritipur : https://www.facebook.com/pages/Newa-Lahana-Kirtipur/202577299791765
If you want to go hard core (I dont recommend unless you have strong stomach), go for Kwa Cha at Swatha. Its in deep patan on the wat from mangal bazzar to bangla mukhi.
Also try Bu: Lal cha : Its on the way from mangal bazzar to gwarko.
For family time : Take them to Jhamel. There are lot of family oriented restaurants there. I went to Moksha and Vespar Cafe. Both equally nice.
Also for the resorts, I went to Riverside resort at Kurintar on the way to manakamana cable car. It was really nice.
Also, for night stay, go to Club Himalaya in Nagarkot to see the sunrise.
All the best !!
Also, take a credit card with you that doesnt charge international transaction fees so that you dont have to carry pile of cash with you. True me, in no time you will spend 5K in restaurants.
@Atomic : By reading your post, it looks like you are from Patan and so am I. And looks like you have not visited Nepal after earth quake. Sandar 5 star momo in Kwalakhu is closed for good. There is now a gift shop instead of momo place.
Also, honocha is closed because of the earthquake. The one near Bhimsenthan is damaged and closed for good. And the one near Krishna mandir is also closed and was told that it will open soon.
And the mahabharat momo is replaced by everest momo in lagankhel .

Is Honacha really closed ? I was so excited to visit there during my upcoming trip. I hope they will open up in a different location soon!
This is an awesome list. Thanks NMC, atomic and NE_Patriots.
Honcha isn't closed. Please don't give false info.
Kirsten, check this out.

I dont understand why ppl are so craze abt honacha, simply dont understand
Usually ppl likes to eat because they have to stand and eat, or squeeze themselves and eat.
The place where they prepare is not hygenic, they peel the boiled potato where they wash the dishes.
Meat is so exposed you can see fly laying eggs and shit in so called dried meat.
Bara is adulterted, they mix 50 percent flour and 50 lentils, still called it woh.
And the biggest thing is they do cheat, they look for the customer, who are new and drunk, and regular customer.
So they just add money in the final bill just like that.
If you visit them ,be careful, coz of customer like us, they make tons of money, they put money in a big bucket and carry in bora(sack) and stored in sack at home.
Notice that when you visit them :)
