Total Stock Market Index Fund: VTSMX (Minimum investment $3,000), VTSAX (Minimum investment $10,000)

Balanced Target-date Fund (Minimum investment $1,000): VFFVX (89.84% Stocks, 10.01% Bonds, 0.15% Reserves), VFORX (88.51% Stocks, 11.45% Bonds, 0.04% Reserves)

P.S. These index funds aren't for immediate gains, but rather long-term investments.

yes... if you want to start with 3k, buy VTSMX... contribute monthly and once it reaches 10k vanguard will automatically convert it to admiral shares(VTSAX)... good luck :D

Go with VTI and VOO

this is only for long term investing...

My Background: Im a stock market pro and have run many hundreds of back tests on various long term strategies.

@mojaboy.... VTI and VOO are indeed very good investment but the way market opened today made me rethink investing on stocks right now... like other investors I'm going for the government bonds for now

Depends on your investment objectives. What is your time horizon for investing? Remember, bonds can equally be important during times of market stress. YTD, the Barclays Aggregate bond index is up almost 6% compared to 4% for the S&P 500. Having a strategic asset allocation methodology can help prevent losses, such as during the market crash of 2008, when a fund invested solely in an index fund which tracks the S&P 500 would have lost 40% of its value. Would also recommend about 20% of the portfolio be invested in small & mid cap stocks.

Source: I do this for a living.
