Sajha people from Boston, what are some of the affordable apartments around Boston? Which area is good for Nepalese in terms of restaurants/crime/outdoors?
Also, do i need to get an apartment with covered parking for winter since I will be moving from Texas and have no experience with snow in winter?
Thank you
I heard you will get cheap rent in Dorchester, but there are catches.
You must look for suburb and commute.
You will move on with the flow of environment , do not scare of weather. Newenglander may be scared with tornados.
I'd say avoid Dorchester and Roxbury at all costs. They have affordable apartments but the crime rates are very high there. We hear of shootings in those neighborhoods almost everyday. Some of the cities around Boston where many Nepalis live are Somerville, Medford, Cambridge, Arlington. Most people I know rely completely on public transportation. Those who have cars rely mostly on street parking.
@mily, Can you provide me some of the apartment's name please? I will be commuting for my job.
Not all apartment complexes have names (at least not the ones I've seen around here). Most people that I know live in smaller apartment buildings or houses. I know some Nepali friends who live in apartment buildings in Arlington along/near Mass Ave. I know some who live in houses in Somerville and some in Malden. I think your best best would be to search on craigslist. The places you could look into are Malden and East Boston besides the cities I mentioned in the previous post. Though it's expensive, it might even be easier to go with a broker.
Boston doesn't have apartment complexes like TX, rather there are multistory houses where you rent. If you are looking for an apt with parking expect about 12-1600 for 1bd room. Its not cheap. You want to be looking around Somervile.Medford,Watertown or Cambridge. There wont be any covered parking spaces. Only big apartments have them and their rent starts around 2500. What is your budget? I would suggest you to get a shared apt.
Allston, Brighton are cheap but infested with college students and mice. So don't go there. One more thing, you need permits to park on city streets. If you live in somerville, you have to get their permit ; if you visit other town then unless the street is unassigned, or has meters its resident only st and you will need overnight permit and so on. Out of state plates are not provided the same permit unless you change the plates. Depending on where you will work you might not even need car.
Thank you @maxpayne, mily and magorkhe1.
