Is the blockade effective in pressuring politicians to make policy changes?

For politicians it is merely a small inconvenience. They can route the limited resources to themselves and/or they can afford to pay black market prices very easily. It would be naive to hope that the blockade affects the politicians enough for them to bow to the demands made.

Who is the blockade actually affecting?

1. Poor people who depend on daily wage to put food on the table. Poor people who lose their jobs due to industry closure - triggered by lack of fuel due to blockade.
2. Poor people who cannot afford black market or transportation for their sick family members
3. The protesters themselves who waste time and energy on a misguided protest.

It's time the protesters and their supporters actually re-accessed the effectiveness and plausibility of the blockade.

And also keep in mind that:
It's poor people and followers who elect those damaged leaders despite the fact that people know those leaders are corrupt and damaged ones. That's the root problem.

The blockade, supported by India, seems to be the only thing that is *working*, or at least may be starting to work. It is a shame the ruling guard aren't statesman who could recognize a problem when they see it, or bother to address it.

If another earthquake kills 10,000 people in Kathmandu tomorrow, KP Oli and his cronies will still not blink an eye or know how to coordinate a disaster response. Worse, the rest of the people of ktm will somehow go on just fine.

What alternatives did you have in mind for the Madhesis?

Nepalibhai,

Many of these leaders were not even elected. People voted against them and they lost. Yet, they got themselves included in the "proportional" quota and rose to be political honchos. The system is designed so that the 'career politicians' can't be voted out. That is the root problem.
