It's same as saying Bahuns don't eat buffalo meat. I think most hindus in US eat beef one way or other.

BIRUWA-- IT'S IRONIC HOW SOME PEOPLE ARE "PRISONERS OF THIS MAN-MADE TRADITIONS". A MUSLIM** FELLA WOULD SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT "PORK". THIS SO CALLED RELIGION AND IT'S SUPERSTITIOUS PRACTICES SEVERELY LIMITS YOUR WORLD VIEW...... OR IN A ANOTHER LAYMAN'S TERM- कुवा को गनाउने च्यान्टे भ्यावुतो लाई कुवा मै गेडा** कनायेर BUSY राख्ने काम गर्छ पासा

Kuro ek kan dui kan maidan huncha thaha cha ni, bhram failina yitti ni lagdaina, come out of illusion man, search for truth instead of diving into lies, think twice before you agree, troubleshoot the problem, find who create the problem, what's the hidden agenda behind the propoganda? It's like calling Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru a saint, but the facts are they ain't. A white man will destroy anyone except his kind, just because they were the outcasted ones..

Controversial i saw an interesting comment in that link

"If your question is, how can a Hindu eat beef, as its a holy animal, I would like to give you some insight.Cow was a holy animal for Yadavas, not to all Hindus. Cow was a way to earn their living. So,you don't kill the one that earns you your daily bread , right? Nothing holy about it. If you insist on it being holy, then you can't eat Chicken (Subramanian/Murugan/Karthikeya ' s flag), eat fish (Remember Mathsya Avatar?), Should consider pig as holy animal and not to eat Ham burgers (Varaha Avatar) or kill a rat (Vehicle of Ganesha). All Hindus should turn vegetarian."

My two cents thought : You are free to eat anything if you want even you claim you are Hindu or something else.

The learned peoples who had written had profound intellegent came with new idea that meat from Cow family is not suitable to human. The only way to make them not to eat is to make it part of religion, as Muslims knew that Pork is not good for health ( carries Tape worm will cause death ) made it untouchable ( muslim also follow the same theory).
So, it is your personal choice and do what ever you want but suggest not to insist or advocate start eating beef.

Telling others what to eat and what not to eat is like telling gay people they can't marry. Keep you damn business to yourself and let people live the way they want.

I don't think anyone is really trying to preach about start eating beef. So I don't know why some of are being defensive here. Did the article hit our weak cord or something? Historian just explored and found out where we started. It's good to know the history, but more importantly the discussion is contextual even now.

Some of you who are saying 'do what you want, and don't force others to do it'; should it not apply this freedom to some religious/ethnic group to have beef without being criminalized? May be I agree with you that I don't want to eat, but someone who does why not abolish such law? What do you think?

During different stages of development of Hindu civilizaion beef was prohibited. reason? who knows
But we know that milk is important than meat. In Indian plains bufallo and cow are two main source of milk and meat. Bufallo is expensive to farm ( bufallo eats lots of food compared to cow and in hot climate they need lots of water compared to cow.)

As population grew society had to choose (as there was no commercial farming) which animal to use for milk and which animal is for both meat and milk.

May be because of ease of farming, color (cows are available in different colors,Bufallo is black only) so sort of racism help cow to get protection from religion. As there was no univeral law,but religion was universal so people decided to give cow protection under religion thats all I think.

Fact1 : around 3000 years ago loads of wild buffalo were available in Indian plains. They even pose danger to human life so buffalo were considered not human friendly compared to cow So bufallo population was not in danger. so need no protection

Fact 2: Bufallo is mainly either swamp type or river type,so in those days if you dont have river or swamp nearby it is difficult to domesticate buffalo.whereas for cow no such restrictions, easy to have cow than buffalo.

Fact 3: Aryans who came from Europe didnt knew about bufallo ( buffalo is considered orignated either in China or in India. So it was easy for aryans to farm cow than buffalo.

Compromise: But society also ned animals for meat.lots of Indians they used buffalo for meat too. Sosociety can not ban both source of meat. Which to choose Cow or buffalo? for milk and both for milk and meat ?

Because of all facts and social behavior mentioned above I think society decided to give cow a religious protection. We all know Darwins theory "Survival of the fittest". Cow got the protection because at that time Cow was fit for it.

Now some hindus in sajha prefer to eat beef some hate it why so?

its all genetic I think

If the gene which is related to religion is strong in you then when someone talks about eating beef, the gene will initiate producing chemical which induce negative feeling so you hate.

If the gene which is related to religion is not strong inside you no such chemical will be released an you will feel comfortable eating beef.

Do we have gene related to religion ? Nope, but we can relate the gene which governs our social behavior to religion.

IMHO, It does not matter whether hindus ate beef or not or eat beef or not. I say this because we forget what 'hindu' is when we try to answer this trivial question.
'Hindu' is a word given by the other people probably persian and other people of the west to the people and civilization living east of the river 'Sindhu'. It is an umbrella term for the people who practices different types of beliefs like animism, monotheism, ancestral worship, nature worship, vedic rituals and worship, shamanism, atheism and various other practices which were handed over to them by their ancestors. This things are not rigidly defined and we keep on changing our values, belief, ideals, rituals to suit our need and the culture we live in. The right word for hindu is 'Sanatan Dharma'.First and foremost, Sanatana Dharma is anadi (without beginning) and also a-paurusheya (without a human founder). It is defined by the quest for cosmic truth, just as the quest for physical truth defines science (this line is copy paste). So we should not care for who did what and why in physical fashion rather see the man's (and yes woman) pursuit for the eternal truth. So in short, yes so called hindus might have eaten beef but it does not mean anything, it just means a hungry man found meat and ate it.
