How many phones can I bring to Nepal ?
I am going back to Nepal after several years. I am taking several phones for family members and friends (7 to be exact, excluding mine). I know I can only take so many cellphones with me without having to pay the custom fee. Any experienced suggestions will be much appreciated.
It depends on your type of status. Anyone who does professional job with legal status such as green card (non DV) or US citizen carries only one.

Divorce Guy,
Your assumptions and baseless accusations may be a part of your own experience and mindset), not necessarily mine. I appreciate your comment though, regardless of its utter stupidity.
As far as I am aware of, you can legally carry 2 (one personal, one official)...However, it depends whether or not you claim the remaining ones. I know most of us won't claim...
I would suggest you not to carry more than 2 in your hand carry. Remaining, just put in your luggage and let them decide whatever they want to do, if they find out about too many phones. In summary, I don't think you need to worry a lot if you carry as many cellphones in your luggage. Enjoy your Nepal trip!!!
It depends on kind of phones you are bringing, Custom people do not care about old and used phones, but they will keep eye on New and Expensive ones.
Do not bother to answer this Bad Mouth guy. If you check his past : he must be skinny , timid and bullied by all. Now it is bursting here and there non-stoppable. Have you heard the story of a man who suppressed his feeling : when it comes out it will be worst.

Magorkhe,
Most of the phones are at least 3 generations old, in tech terms. Some are Nokia Lumia 2011 phones but in new conditions, as I bought them new. Some are iPhone 4 and such.
Kamalbro
How did you buy that many phones? I work full time professional job but still my budget can't meet that.
I tried to buy some iPhones when I visited Nepal last time. Each unlocked iPhone costs $650. How did you manage these budgetwise?
Thanks,
i took 5 last time, carried one with me and put 4 in luggage. if you put in luggage you should be fine unless you turned out to be very unlucky, and they opened your baggage, which I have never heard of...Have fun in Nepal
NepaliBhai,
They are older generation phones, ,most of which came out in 2011-2013. I agree though, that the newer generation phones will cost you more than $500 each, which I would not have been able to afford, since Im buying for multiple family members.
Neelima,
Can you only take one phone with you or two as a personal belonging? I keep hearing mixed replies.
My last visit to Nepal was 2010 and I carried our old phones and I wanted to know the value and checked the price. They were too old and can not be sold.
Our country is developed that much.
Hope no one tells you take your junk back to usa. Some one wanted to give a digital camera ( 6/7 years ago) that was not the standard of receiver because it must be a DSLR camera.
You will be fine, if your luggage opened , tell them , could not throw away still working and someone can utilize.
Magorkha,
Nepal ma paisa ko kei value chaina aile....Inflation is rampant. The whole country is running on Diaspora remittance and inflated property value. Im going to Nepal after more than a decade and I am very anxious as to what I expect and what I will experience.
Kamal Bro,
I just went to Nepal about a month ago and I had 6 phone including the one I was using, all in my handcarry and backpack. I had two iphone 5s, one LG G3, One S4, one alcatel, one mytouch . I neither declared now did anyone ask if I had any electronics. BTW it was all gift to my cousins and relatives.
I had a bad experience with putting my iphone 3G in my luggage though. The box was there but the phone was gone when my luggage came out last time(3 yrs ago).
But it might be different case for you. And no I donot have anyone in airport who would help me bypass the custom or that machine near the exit door.

Be careful of putting valuables in your luggage.
When I went back 3 years ago, I lost my video camera and chocolates.
Few months back, when my parents returned, the lock was broken and a digital camera was missing along with all cables which were for other devices. So, if you plan to put those phones in luggage, make sure to check your luggage thoroughly when you receive it and keep track/list of each item in your luggage so that you can verify. Khalti na bhayeko luga lagauda ni saman chorchan.. achammai cha TIA.
I carried 11 last December. Two with me and rest in two luggages. Custom officer did not even bother to look at my luggages while i was passing through the gate. May be I got lucky that day. You should be fine with seven.
