I don’t remember the first time I heard of him, the great writer Samrat Upadhyay, might be around 2001 probably. He was awarded with Whiting Writer’s award for his book “Arresting God in Kathmandu” Being still in school and trying to write something in English , I wanted to read that book and see what it takes to be a writer and to be famous like him. After 13 years, finally I had chance to buy that book from amazon which cost me around 14 dollars. I was eagerly waiting for its arrival and was very much excited to read it. I had faint vision of one of the story in that book. I heard how beautifully he describes the droplets of rain falling from the roof of a local hotel. The book I ordered arrived and in no time I found myself in my bed reading the first chapter. Before I started the first chapter, I had the habit of reading everything from the cover page, back page, reviews etc. leaving no sentences and words behind. So here I go and started the first chapter. I finished the first page and got nothing exciting and to the second page and not so much interesting again. I thought of going to the contents page and select some exciting titles but I had acquired the habit of finishing what I have started. I could delay to finish the chapter but could not think of skipping and move to the next one uffff. And after 10 days, the book is still on my table folded into the third page, could not bring enough courage to start it again. I am sure there are some chapters which I will definitely like. May be the first chapter is not good enough for me, maybe I have not dived enough into the story or maybe I have accumulated too much expectations in all these 13 years !!! I will update here as soon as I progress in finishing some chapters. I would like to hear opinions from all of you who have read it, thanks

Thanks Nilima for the response, so that means if I finish the first chapter, no need to go thru all of the stories...? You said it's kinda similar ....lol
Looking at the only one comment in this posting, I am thinking that many people have not heard of him.

I too immensely enjoyed Arresting God in Kathmandu. But, it's been a long time since I read that book. I don't remember much of the details now, but yes, the theme is pretty much the same, through a few ranges of themes. It sure did excite me with the intimate details in the stories, and not one story was short of glorifying sex!

You haven't even finished reading the first chapter! You'll have to read more than 3 pages of the chapter for the story to captivate your mind. Give it a try; very likely, you'll enjoy it. :-)
