Lying for asylum and lying in resume

Few days back there was thread on sajha about how unethical it is to lie to get asylum in the US. People were up in arms about it and I was thinking about the number of job seekers who lie in resume. The scary parts is that there are established job recruitment and consulting companies that train students to exaggerate their experience and add ficticious years to their job history.

How ethical is that? Or is lying is resume more ethical than lying in filing asylum?

I won't term these stuffs as "lying" . Instead, I would say it's all about "manipulating the truth". It's because both parties have nothing to lose but gain to some degree. Man, morals are relative . It changes with the circumstances. How ethical is it for the government to lobby big businesses just to get money for campaign? How ethical is it for the lawyers to fight for a client even after knowing  s/he is a criminal? How ethical is it for the doctors to prescribe drugs for celebs?  How ethical is it to flirt with other women if you already have a gf or are married?...................................
Fake asylum - Well, the asylee gets to live the American dream and the US as we all know is hungry for both cheap and skilled man power.
Fake resume - You won't believe me but many jobs in IT, supply is lesser than demand. Else, it won't be easy finding jobs. The job seeker receives a good fat paycheck and the company gets its work done.
I ain't preaching bad stuff. I'm saying things just the way it is. No offense intended.

This is a very interesting topic. Everybody in sajha is aware of both situations.

anyway if "Morals are relative". Does that mean all actions can be justified? If so, then aren't we being biased accepting some actions and rejecting some? I guess the morals are more justified by what the majority accepts.

Just some thoughts...

I was about to note basically the same thing that DKG presents.
It is rather philosophical issue...such that what is ethics and how far can/should you take. It'll be rather disastrous to define it as cut and dry. It never is...

- I would say... how about (not) being honest to your feelings...is not that a lying?
- Telling your gf/bf or kid that you are 'proud' of them, while you are just trying to boost their feeling.
- A nice gesture to make someone feel good...'how do I look (in this dress)?' .. 'you look great!"
- OR Even more contextually, checking on an answer in multiple choice question when you have no freaking idea what the answer is.

I think it's all contextual..Not that I like people lying about things...but the society is/has become extremely utilitarian and one cannot survive with at least some kind of (white) lies. How far you take it...how low/high life one is..(as if there is a way to calibrate it).

While I agree that morals are relative (we all have lied many times), manipulating the truth is certainly not the case in most of the fake asylum as well as fake resume cases. Let's call it what it is, they are lies. 6 years in Java Servlet development? Sure.

Marven your point sounds good but you are forgetting one important thing.

If you say 'I am a king' or 'I was a king' then you are lying. But if you say 'i will be a king' then noone can say you are lying. The point is noone knows whats gonna happen tomorrow. You might make a wrong prediction which is not the same as lying whereby you claim an untrue thing is true.

Personally I don't think lying on resume or lying on asylum story is bad, as long as it does not hurt anyone. Desperate times call for desperate measures and what is important is the survival of the fittest and you have to do what it takes to survive. Plus, everyone's doing it and if you don't do it, you're the one that's gonna lose.
