Data recovery is expensive. Do you back up your data?

Two months ago, one of my hard drives with over 1TB of data crashed. Taking with it, 5 years worth of picture memories of my daughter and all other pictures I had taken during the last 5 years.

The drive would not connect at all. Upon taking it to data recovery specialists, the final cost of data recovery was one thousand dollars :(

Not a pleasant amount of money to have to cough up, but I did anyways because the memories stored in the pictures are too valuable to compare with the price.

But the lesson was learnt. You need to find a good solution to back up your data.

For temporary purpose I purchased a 2TB USB Western Digital Passport Drive for $119.99 that is working beautifully to back up my important files, and also computer files in case something needs to be restored at some point.

Today I saw this deal from a website that offers lifetime backup for unlimited number of computers with unlimited space for $99.99. I could not pass up this offer and just purchased it. It is a one time payment and all your files will now be backed up online so you won't even have to worry about having USB drives. You can get the deal here http://www.drivepop.com/dealnews/  This deal is only temporary, normally they have a per month pricing, so if you plan to get it, do get it soon!

I will use the USB Drive simply as extra space for anything I might need!

Safe Computing!

This is an issue worth discussing. I am a little skeptical however.
Most storage service charge monthly fees. How can we trust this company to be around after 5-10 years from now?

Kiddo, I agree that the deal sounds too good to be true, but this current deal is only a promotion. You can read questions and answers on that page itself.

If you navigate to the homepage of the website, their normal rate is $59/ year.

Even if you buy some other service for like $50 a year or cheaper, there is no way to guarantee the company will be around for 5-10 years from now.

Good luck choosing!

How is it even economically feasible to store unlimited amount of data for unlimited amount of time at a fixed amount of money?

Sounded fishy to me.

Then I found the catch:
It is not a true backup solution, but a mirroring solution. That is, it deletes data from the backup in 30 days if you delete it from you computer. so you actively have to connect your external drives to the computer at least once a month for the data to not go away(I am guessing it works).

Additional terms and condition in the link.

www.drivepop.com/terms/

I still think it is an attractive offer, not as attractive as it looks though.

First thing I would do is to stay away from these cloud backups.
Second, I would invest at least on 3 different external drives with higher capacity.
I had my backup on 500GB, before I waited to see it go bad, I bought another 2 Terabyte External Drive, and transferred all that 500 GB to it. That old 500GB still is there, but don't use it at all. Now, this 2 Terabyte External Drive , just recently got replaced by 3rd  three Terabyte Western Digital USB3 drive, all old content got transferred to it.  I don't use that 2 TB anymore, sitting there as a backup. All new backups on this new 3 TB external drive is being mirrored at the moment to my computers harddrive and itself.
And looking forward to 64GB-128GB new flash drive coming soon in the market.
Besides, dropbox is there to satiate my other flashy storage need for documents and stuffs..
Why would you wanna put your important files on the cloud, Neo bro?
I know there is big marketing stunt on this new cloud thing.. but I don't buy it yet.
