Friends, What would be a best Nepali national song to teach 5-10 years old kids who were born in the US and now learning Nepali language and culture? We are looking for a song that students can possibly sing before Nepali language/culture class starts... We were thinking of either "Raato ra Chandra Surya..." or "Gaunchha Geet Nepali.." Would appriciate any other suggestions...what do you think about current Nepali National Anthem? I have reviewed previous thread on this topic.Thanks to San for keeping this thread in the archive. Thanks to Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai ji, kalankisthan ji, krishna ji, M.P. ji, suman r dhakal ji for taking time to recommend national songs. I will have school instructors listen to the songs with students and pick the one that fits best for children. So far, I have found "Gaunchha Geet Nepali.." in RA format at this location on the net. http://www.nepalisong.net/rastriyagaan.html I am looking for MP3 version "Raato ra Chandra Surya.." is on one of 1974AD's CDs. So I have it. Sumanji, I bought couple of 1974AD Album's when they were here. Which Album do you think that particular song is on? 1974AD has contributed some funds they raised in the US to this school so would be nice if their song is picked if it is appropriate and suitable. I think, your idea of trying something new is good as long as it is suitable for kids and decribes Nepal and Nepalis well so that kids learn something good about Nepal in the process. Of course, we will have to translate the song in English at the beginning to teach its meaning.. I would really appriciate if you could send a copy of song you are recommending so that we all can listen. Any other song suggestions, MP3 downloads and actual CD/Cassettss contribution to School welcome.... -PS |

hello subediji, the song that i mentioned of AD is from their new album. the one that they were selling at their concert. the one that has mostly old songs and only few new songs. and yes i can send you a copy of the one i mentioned above. just give me your address. u can email me at dhakal@u.arizona.edu i can send a burned copy. i think the AD song will be hard for kids to sing and only has few line of lyrics. but it's one rocking song. it will surly bring the house down. so i would go for the mellower one. 1974 ko ek ghamasan fan suman |

Another suggestion that is not mentioned: Tarai hera kati ramro hariyo ban hunale pahad hera jhanai ramro guransa phulnale ma ta jhilke yesai ramo, yesai ramro ma ta jhilke Nepali hunale sagarmatha merai sirko topi bhaidinale (don't know the full lyric) MAHA used this song for their parody in rastriya gaun khane katha. |

I'm with M.P. ji, At this very juncture of what our country is going through, the song though seems rebellious sounds very appropriate, Gaun gaun bata utha, basti basti bata utha, Yo desh ko muhar, ferna lai utha, Hat ma kalam hune haru, kalam liyera utha, ........ Sath ma kehi nahune haru, awaj liyera utha. |

Puru-ji, Whatever you decide, please, for heaven's sake, do not use that damn National Anthem. How long are we going to praise the King and worship him? Here is a list of other songs that come to my mind right now. These are not Raajbhaktis but rather Rastrabhaktis: 1) Gaau gaau baata utha [mentioned above] 2) Haami ubhiyeko dharaatal maa aaja saahasijo paailaa saarau [forgot the name of the band; this song is awesome] Kunti Moktan's "Bhir gaaule budho" depicts the true Nepali scenario: ....pahaad maa ghar chha sabai chhan bhanthyo chhoraa buhaari le sahenan bhanthyo diyeko linthyo, saghaai dinthyo.... But this may not be suitable for children. |

For example class 1 ko: hami dherai sana chau hamro mutu sano cha tyo sano mutu ma bishal desh cha tyo desh lai uthaune hamro sano haat cha tyo saano haat ko paurakh thulo cha Class 2 ko: Kati ramro hamro desh afnai boli afnai bhesh desh chaina saano yo hiuchuli nai chaano ho sagarmatha dhoja lee mathi mathi janu ho Class 3 ko chahi taatkaalin (ra pheri ahile ko) byawastha ko chakadi garne khalko thiyo, so I will skip there here. Class 4 ko pani samjhida: hey amaa nepal kahi chau ghama kahi chau chaya hay parantu eutai murti ma biraat nepali naama hay (tyo hay hay bhanda kata kata hindi misaeko jasto lagcha:) Khoi budho bhaiyo aba, these were the rastriya geets printed on the back of Janak Siksya le nikaleko text books from my primary school days. It should not be difficult for children to learn those songs. La just my suggestion hai. |

"Lahara Pahara" is a simple but powerful song. This song is highly recommended.
