Recalling my childhood days is my favorite pastime. I enjoy sitting in my room alone with my eyes closed, capturing faded images of my early days. No wonder, those were the precious moments that will always remain safeguarded in my heart.
During those days, we did not get opportunity to be selective like the children of these days. We were compelled to enjoy within ourselves. We did not have Playstations, no video games at all, no sky channels, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and played our favourite “Ghwain” or gatta or dori or chor police or lukamari . We would enjoy eating jeri and swaari on Saturday mornings. We did not have known or seen hamburgers. Local hajams were our beauty parlours and we would design our own haircuts. Nepal bandhs were unheard of and meen pachaas ko bida were the only longest breakouts. We would just pass our bidas by lying in the sun, eating bhogates and playing with neighbourhood children. While girls would enjoy playing their favourite bhada kuda, boys would be enjoying with guccha, khopis and dandibiyo.
When NTV started, I remember waiting anxiously for my favorite cartoons those time, barba papa. Chakrabyu, tadako basti, nimitta nayak are special because they remind me of the days when the televison was brought in our home. We would talk endlessly about those serials in our classrooms, assuming what will happen in the next part. Kicchu dada, Deepak Thapa, BMX khukuri were the most popular names in our gossips.
Another thing that I constantly remember is my brother’s obsession for Guccha and kites those days. They used to sit ceaselessly in front of it and count them several times a day. I still remember my parents shouting at them for not doing their home works or not revising their lessons, while they would be busy putting majha in the thread of their lattai, to prove themselves powerful in the battle of kite flying, shouting “changa chait”.
Turning back and memorizing the former days leaves a smile in my face. Many interests and hobbies and many passions have passed through me. Those were my childhood days, where life was only lived for fun and enjoyment. Were those the good old days? Yes, indeed. Yes, those were the good old days, but long gone……..
oys_chill Posted on 12-Feb-04 07:43 PM

Mysterious gal,
Thanx for reviving such vivid and powerful memories of childhood. for sometime I felt I was trapped into some trance reading your memories. I must say I can relate to every thing you jus recalled. We live in very different times now. It is pretty sad that all those games and series we were part of will never be seen again in our neighborhoods.

Having more than one sister, hesitantly I would often take part in their games...be it ghwain, Gatta, or being dulaha in their khyal khyal ko bihe with next door neighbors. WE'd sometimes do banbhoj in bari, or jado ma aago tapdai ghost stories. Besides jerri n swaari, Chiso chiso katara ko DAHI was delicious too :). Though I wasn't much of a guccha player, we played a lot of seven stones and lukamari. I remember the first day when we got TV in the house, watching even "sadhana sangam" with great interest. Watching mahabharat and ramayan with family and some neighbors was something I always looked forward to. Besides the cartoons, there were english serials like The night rider, street hawk, air wolf, dempsey and makepice and our ever so dreaded "DR WHO"

I don't know about nepali actors but I believe Bhuwan KC is the only evergreen superstar of Nepal, and I must confess "Samjhana" has been my foremost favourite movie of all times :). I remember getting black nuk from Asan to fight Panjabi's dreaded dhagos during those beautiful autumn days. Recently my friend wrote that, there're hardly any kites in sky even in Dashain. HOw about making those beautiful autographs, and those ever endearing phrases like :
Make new friends, but don't forget old
because new is silver, old is gold ;)
aah. Memories those memories!

Disclaimer: Being from handigaon, do you know whereabouts of dakyy these days?
mysterious gurl Posted on 12-Feb-04 09:27 PM

Thanks Oys for adding extras in my memory. Yes I now remember watching mahabharat and ramayan without blinking my eyes and I was also a regular viewer of all the english serials like The night rider, street hawk, dempsey and makepice. DR WHO, wow...even now my blood chills , those days it was a masterpiece! Remember that bike of Street Hawk and that amazing car of night rider!!!!

Actually Oys, I am a great fan of your writings in the memory lane and I must confess your writings inspired me to write these pieces. Anyway, it looks from our postings that we relate to all the things of those days.

Yes I also heard there're hardly any kites in sky these days. I feel sorry to the current generations who will miss such golden things. Let "Changa chait" echo in the sky not become a history!!!

And making autographs, asking to write T.C at the end ( where I would always write best actor jeetendra and best actress jaya prada....ehehe) and those popular phrases, its all making me nostalgic.....

Lolz... guys you just made me take a huge step back to my childhood...
when I was a kid, I couldn't wait to get older, to be a part of those grown up stuff; thought it was real cool. How I wish now to be a kid again!!
Myst gurl , my fav cartoon was barba papa too..." barba fall papa...nananana... Did you miss that?" I loved this line... I still repeat this ' did you miss tht' line... dont know why but it was the most funny and interesting line for me during my barba papa fan period.
and yeah Dr Who... ohhhhhhh I used to have my eyes fixed on tv and later on all the pain would have to be coped by my older bro. I'd knock on his door at night and plead him to take me in coz I dare not sleep alone... those lil spaces in the window and the dim Zero watt light...ohhhhhh scary.... in the morning, my brother always used to raise hell, it used to take me ages to figure out why.. and the reason, well ! at night when i used to plead him, I'd plead him like " dada malai hajur ko khutta ma bhaye pani sutaishyo na..." in the morning, my khutta used to be on his nose...
street hawk ra night rider and how could you guys forget about "Flash" my favorite one? NKOTB.. owww yeah!! they rocked.. at least for me they really did back then.
changa ko ta kura nagaraun... dada udaune ma tyo water tank thattaune... coz he used to make me do tht... but tht was the fun part... I loved it when he used to make me shout... ratooooooo dharke dhaagoooooo chhoooodd... dhaago nabhaye tuppi chhoodddddd... oh my gawd... so many memories... my fav festival holiiii.... bacha ma tyo khalti ma abbir ra raang liyera baloon liyera... maja nai arkai... ani dai haru sanga laagera PK ko kt haru lai baloon hirkaune... harey Indeed ti din haru Samjhanda!!!!
SITARA Posted on 16-Feb-04 05:43 AM

Do you all remember the never dying, every Saturday song by Leo Sayer:"More than I can say"?!!! My neighbour's sons used to drive my sis and I nuts booming the song from the Kausi chhat every time we were out in the garden!!!
tabasco Posted on 16-Feb-04 09:25 AM

.what about "sunday pop" on NTV ??
;)
czar Posted on 16-Feb-04 11:27 AM

I remember a flashy bike in some TV series. And of being smitten by the female Doc in Flash.

Then Star TV arrived and brought with it Formula 1 racing. I recollect the excitement of gathering at a friend’s place on race days to watch Damon Hill’s nail biting wining season in ’96. And F1 motorbike racing and Mick Doohan the unbeatable Aussie.

Then attempting such passing moves and driving a racing line at break neck speed on the then newly widened Naubise-Mugling highway. The untrammeled joy of sweeping around steep hair-pin bends astride a motorbike on the Simbhanjyang-Bhainse section of the old Tribhuvan Rajpath. Apart from the odd tanker or truck, that road was mostly empty and allowed our imaginations and bike throttles to run full blast!

Which reminds me of a Mary Hopkins song my uncle loved to play when I was child.

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Revival Posted on 16-Feb-04 11:55 AM

Amazing recollection of memories! Looks like mysterious, oys and i are around the same generation!!! I am an irregular writer but an avid reader of sajha postings. Yeah those were really the golden days. Have any one of you gone to the river banks (bagmati for me) around late evenings and night and stayed there light fire and talked about ghosts, and those yummy "poleko alu"? May be this is too specific for me. Also swimming in the river butt naked...ha ha ha...truely amazing days!! Yeah NKOTB rocked but for me i was more tilted towards "Shut through the heart" by Bon Jovi and "Sacrifice" by Elton John around that time in later years. But indeed Barba papa, street hawk, night rider and to add on to that list "Bonanza" was one of my favourites too later on it would be "Spiderman" from "Doordarshan" and Three Stooges, Dennis the Menance etc after the outbreak of star plus channels.
mysterious gurl Posted on 16-Feb-04 06:39 PM

Wow, Epiphany...interesting to read your piece. Ha ha ...so you feel so scared by DR WHO.....Indeed It was like that ni!! Ani tabasco how can I forget Sunday pop by Bhusan Dahal......Those days there was neither channel V nor MTV ..ani ta Sunday pop ma repeated songs bhaye pani miss nai hudainathyo ni...ya Sitara More than I can say, careless whisper, sacrifice, last christmas...ya those were the songs of our times....
Czar, so you did experience the racing...sounds amazing.....
Revival, when you talked about bagmati, I remembered one time popular talks of ghosts (or what shall I say??) , when that bagmati bridge was broken.....Do you all remember it.....it was a never ending stories those days hai......
eNigma_too Posted on 17-Feb-04 12:21 AM

I use to think I am too attached to the past , childhood days, but finding outhers to share it with is immensely gratifying.
I spent few years of my childhood in kathmandu before leaving for India. My memories of those playfull days are mostly similar to others posted here. I remember pinning badges of hollywood stars into my school bag. The room wall all covered with poster of Phoebe Cates, Tom Cruise (Top Gun), Hidemi Ishikawa.I particulartly remember how coke tasted back then, the burning sensation in the nose after you finish drinking ..I think coke tasted best back then. How can I forget those wonderful love songs by George Michael, Leo Sayer, Elton John. My school sweetheart gave me the cassatte with the song, "Love you more then I can say", and how I ended up listening to it almost everyday. Saturday cartoon...I still go,"clickety click, Barba trick" sometimes..and "variety, variety show".
The foggy winter morning, could hardly see the sun till 11-12 am. We would go out jogging, the fields all covered white with morning frost, almost looked like it snowed last night.
Winters are no more the same in Kathmandu, neither are a lot of other things. In the golden sand of time, these memories are the footprints we leave behind. Once in a while we look back, and cherish those wonderyears.
KALANKISTHAN Posted on 17-Feb-04 07:10 AM

"Variety Variety show" yeah... LOL... remember the drum-rolling in that show? drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... ehehe... that was enough to bite the nail for. "aba ke hola" re kyaa.. ;) and what about Tom Cruise's Jacket later popularized by Salman Khan? One of my friend's brother spent more money on the badges than what he spent on jacket re. :P.... and A-ha's fashion that hit the street of kathmandu when we were kids.. those black nylon string that you wear on your writst.. Wham!'s hairstyle.... and George Michaels rayban sunglass? eh... Anil Kapoor later adapted that look. ;) Sunday Pop and Michael Chands radio show were only source for free music. We used to listen to Wham! and Scorpions at the same time... "wake me up before you go go" and "rock you like hurricane" :P -- Remember BreakDance? trying to remember hard... it's been a while... :P

Pashupati trip every Saturday mornings and then Jeri swary and later late brunch with Khasi ko masu bhat was something always awaited for.

Mysterious, yeah very true, i had a friend and we decided to stay all night in bagmati one day to look out for that ghost. When the clock stroke twelve, i was so scared, I told my friend I am going and he can stay if he would like to. He said he is not a chicken. So I left, as soon as I was out of his sight, he goes "Ye ma, ke garya malai yesto, eklai nachodana, dar lagyo bhanya" ha ha ha ha. I went back and saw him shivering. I told him if he saw the ghost or what..but he just asked me to hurry back to our houses....
Hope to hear more of those golden days

Waiting for a New Beginning.

Talking about Bagmati ko ghost, I remember my brother telling me a few years back how a group of them in motorcycles would go to Bagmati around 10/11 in the night and divide themselves to the ends of the bridge. They would come all prepared with black shawls, matches, lighters and so on. Then they would get down to the job - scaring the hell out of innocent people with many tricks.

Anybody remembers West Indies cricket tour to India in 87 (?)

West Indies used to be power house at that time under the brilliant skipper Vivian ‘Master Blaster’ Richards. To complement him, great batsmen likes of Richard Richardson, Jeff Dujon, Logie, and bowlers Hooper, Ambrose, Malcolm ‘Maco’ Marshall, Walsh, Harper and others.... I enjoyed it immensely; it was my first cricket test series match that I got to see on TV. Till this day, I am still big fan of West Indies team.
czar Posted on 19-Feb-04 08:16 AM

AX bro, I recollect Curly Ambrose and his team demolish the opposition. Didn't watch the entire five day Test match, but parts I watched were fascinating exhibitions of fast bowling and superb fielding.

Some of those slow moving but deceptive spin bowlers had the West Indian batsmen in trouble with those tricky deliveries. I remember thinking, its such a slow ball the Indians are delivering, surely those gigantic west indians are going to hit that ball clear out of the stadium. Then I watched a spinner let fly a ball with a hard to time bounce, it curls and the batsman is hitting thin air. Next thing you know the wicket is down and the fellow is out!

India was hosting a Test match and I recollect attending classes where over half of the student body had some sort of radio stuck to their ear. The match commentary was blaring out of the cafeteria radio and students crammed in there during break time to follow the progress ofthe match. Even in class, every so often the professor would stop to ask "Whats the score ?" and then continue teaching !

During a visit to Calcutta, I remember being shown the Eden Gardens stadium where, at a Test match with Pakistan in the 70's, the fans rioted and demolished most of the stadium !

Czar,
How about those RXG 125 CC vs the widely used Hero Honda Race? I had a RX, made it look like a Ducati with handle slightly bent down through some amazing mechanical work and then shifted my body a little bit down wearing a Carl Fogarty look alike helmet through its gorgeous mirror bent down to ensure I had no dusty eyes when racing. Brooomm Broommm, lets go brother. Start point, the Jawalakhel chowk curving a little through to pulchowk marathon momo, across the check point which was pulchowk big yellow goverment building, re do some fueling works the Pulchow police gas station. Wheeling through the wide road of kupandole, down the road curving through hotel Himalaya at a 80 km p hr speed, through to the last point that was the bagmati pool. The winner was ofcourse RX Repsol Honda G. Haha fun ha??

Ax bro, I remember that series, Curtly Ambrose and Walsh, the two great West Indian fast bowlers, taking wickets through some awesome boucy deliveries, unplayable. And then anyone remember that England vs. West Indies series when the game was called off when in the 10th over because of the ball that bounced amazingly and then next one kept down trapping batsman right in front. Couple of England players were injured through some bouncy balls, Mike Atherton was one, I think Alec Stewart too. The pitch was simply too dangerous to bat on. And then on Soccer ofcourse, I absolutely enjoyed watching the semifinal between Brazil vs. Holland I think at the 1988 world cup. One of the best matches I have ever watched.

Brazil scored first then it was all Holland, as Holland just totally outplayed the world champions, through absolutely amazing passing streaks, that probably went down as the best matches Holland played and had to go down as the loose in the tie breakers. It was a very good game..

AX man..
I do not think Curtely Ambrose and Malcolm Marshall played in that 1987 series against India. Patrick Patterson and Walsh were thier main bowlers. I think Ambrose debuted on the series against Australia right after they played against India. And how can you forget their great opening batsmen Gordon Greenidge (sp?) and Desmond Haynes. I remember all these because I started to know about cricket from Reliance World cup in india and pakistan and West Indies played that series right after the conclusion of 87' world cup.
