Dear Sajhaites,

I am curious to know if there is any DHARANE among Sajhaites.
rai Posted on 13-Jul-03 02:41 AM

You've got one here!!
vivid Posted on 13-Jul-03 02:47 AM

How many years do I have to live in Dharan to make me a Dharane??
If 12 yrs is enough, then I'm in, :)
DryIce33 Posted on 13-Jul-03 03:42 AM

Ma janmeko dharanma nai ho.
Bhunte Posted on 13-Jul-03 03:58 AM

if one night, i m here...
vivid Posted on 13-Jul-03 05:42 AM

Here goes a picture of Dharan, reminds me of my college days!

OU812 Posted on 13-Jul-03 06:26 AM

AHEM!!

Is this a roll call? If so, Present Sir.

Vivid, what's angle of the photo? Hattisar or Twinkling view?
vivid Posted on 13-Jul-03 06:33 AM

QU812,
Think the photographer took 180d angle, as u can see the sky meeting the koshi river at the far back, :D.

sangam Posted on 13-Jul-03 06:44 AM

Dharane nai pare ma pani.

Mathillo hall, tallo hall, bhanu chowk, chata chowk, chokibari, shiva marg, ratna chowk, zero point, fusre, naya bajaar, purano bajaar, bijaypur...... sabbai yaad aaucha. jata puge pani, man ta sadhai dharanmai.
KALANKISTHAN Posted on 13-Jul-03 06:47 AM

Oh Dharan!
I've been there for 3 hour's! Gotar-ing plate ka plate momo's! Farshi momo's re hehe... 1 plate ma char gota -- etra bade bade maan ka! Such a beautiful scenery, tyo dekhera malai tyahi basera bhudi syappa paarera Rajesh Hamal ko filmi geet gaauna mann laagera katro dhunchakra!

OU812 Posted on 13-Jul-03 07:09 AM

You are Dharane if you have survived following ordeals and lived to tell the tale.

1) Cycle at breakneck speed from Amarhat to Zero point and crashed in Naali

2) Fought with Guys from other Toles (Throwin stones and running away is acceptable)

3) Ate Chatpate, Chaksala, Pachak, Ice-lolly, Momo on Chatraline posh restau (Only the strong survive)

4) Exasperating petrol-refill stop at before entering bus stop at bhanu chowk.

5) Adam teased or received verbal lashing form fiery dharane lass. (sometimes kicked the daylights out)

6) Gone picnic at Nisane Khola

7) Boozy sessions at Bhedetar, Ithari and Tharara. (Sober enough to ride back home)

8) Fishing at Sardhu Khola

9) Walked through Sidra-Bazaar without fainting.

10) Walked through Chatachowk without stopping for paan

11) Date in Ghopa Camp (Nurse = extra points)

12) Bitten by bug and suffocated in Ganesh Taakiz
vivid Posted on 13-Jul-03 07:28 AM

QU812,
You are hilarious!
Made me remember all those naughty days back in dharan. But most of the ordeals you stated here, I was not able to follow, but still I consider myself a DHARANE.
Ordeal no:1, you can read my bicycle ordeal in "kati wata rey" thread started by deep.
3, Laxmi bhaiya ko thela agadi ubhera ryal singan hundai tato piro chatpate and aloo chop kha.
5, One lass from ratna chowk le ranga chowk ko keta haru ko kathalo samatera sato liyeko drishya ajai jasto lagcha.
6. Been to Nishane khola, sardu khola, shivajhatta, bhendetaar for picnics. On and how can I ever forget that picnic at Kali khola. Police le khedayera 5 hrs marathon race diyeko, :)
9, walking past sidra bazaar was just like walking past a mall with an alluring scent.
10, walking past chatachowk was my everyday ordeal so no wonder I only tasted paan for the first time in Vanaras, Amitav bachan ko lahai lahai ma lagera, ;)
12, In my whole stay in dharan for 12 yrs, only entered Ganesh takijz twice so don't recall the bug bite.

So, am I accepted in the gangs of dharane???

vivid Posted on 13-Jul-03 07:38 AM

Also, how can I forget, when I first went to Ktm, I nearly cried when I saw those small momochas instead of those full bodied thaili shaped momos of dharan. YUMMY YUMMY, mukhai rasayo......
OU812 Posted on 13-Jul-03 08:55 AM

Vivid you liked my "Being Dharane Criteria" :P TY TY.

After reading your daredevil antics, one can say you are a bonafide Dharane. Glad to know someone in sajhaland shares my huckleberry kancha days. But why on earth would one go to Vanaras and taste paan? Strange.

I agree with your obervation on tusukka pareko momochas of KTM Kya Raddi ni!! But momos are momos. They are all above the law.

Hahahahaha....
OU812 and Vivid, you guys are funny.... You guys put me right in the middle of Dharan...or should I say Chhata Chowk where I spent most of my teenage Years just wandering around....remember 'Raju Center' video store infront of post office??
I love my place...there is no place like Dharan--clean streets, awesome weather, friendly people (not so friendly if you started to show off/esp. if you are NOT from Dharan), hehehehe, clear/fresh air ans so forth.... Viva Dharan!
alnepali Posted on 13-Jul-03 12:34 PM

To add the list of Dharane ordeals:
- Evening @ Ganesh Sukuti's Roof Top "Bar" for "Adhoowako Jaad"
- You somehow know "Nirmal Conay"
- Woke up at 3am and made it to Bijaypur Daanda with a Boombox
- Passed out at "Khare Khola" after an overdose of "Bhaang" on Shiva Ratri
- Always on the look out for "free tickets" at "Ganesh Takij"
- Have an attitude towards KTM and Birtanagar folks
- Never pay full price for local transportation
- More Coming................

vivid Posted on 13-Jul-03 02:45 PM

OU812,
..Daredevil antics, what a compliment I have here.
About the paan saga, I never used to chew them while I was in dharan. But when I was in Vanaras(India tour), all my classmates started saying that the paan of Vanaras is the best, and related to the story of Amitav bachan singing that song, vanarasi paan or sth...sth.... tempted me to try one there and then. Still I didn't like the taste and had to spit it out.
Chiple ji,
Which gate? Tinkune ma Engg. college agadi ko gate ko kura garya ho ki ke??
Tyo thelera start garnu parne taxi was far better choice you had made during that time, I presume or if you had taken that khatera land rover drive from chatachowk to chatara then by the time you reach chatara, nobody would have recognized you covered in full dust. Ani Gajur hotel ko tongba le sarai mohani lagaye jasto cha ni???

OU812 Posted on 13-Jul-03 03:42 PM

Vivid I am your compliments man Ma'am.

vivid Posted on 13-Jul-03 04:01 PM

I remain speechless thee, heh! heh! ( to accept or not to?)
Thought the compliment man was roaming around DC, ;)

Thanks Dharanian and Non-Dharanians for participating in my thread on Dharan. Yes! for us who come from Dharan, it will always be the best place on earth. Nepal is beautiful but DHARAN.. YESKO TA KURAI NAGAU.
Vivid and OU812 really made me nostalgic. Nice to hear about one of the famous personalities of Dharan 'the Nirmal Konday'. He is one of its kind. There are other unforgettable ones too, such as JHAPALI, The MARADONA of Dharan. Heard that he could not start the game without a few bottles of PHENSIDYL. Dharan forgive all as he is now Ward Chairman (now adjunct) and big man in sporting arena in Dharan. I remember a few DADAS, BEDE and PANDEY...don't know where are they. There was a THARKE too, a vagabond character who almost won PRADHANPANCH seat... THE NEXT, the musical bad.....CHHAPANI LE CHHAN CHHAN, DHABAKI LE HAN, DHABAKI KO NIGARLE LAGYO MALAI BAN, GANGA BARDAN, Bob Marley of Dharan. KATI BHANNE, DHERAI CHHAN DHARANKA HASTIHARU.
By the way any of you dharanians have seen movies in SHIV CINEMA or GANESH TALKIES in HK (Half K...). With no money in pocket it was a good way of watching movie. Do you remember that most of the football tournaments, particularly final KHEL, used to end in DUNGA-MUDA fight:Refree always used to get the first stone. And the BHOTEPULKO 30 degree slope BHAYEKO MAIDAN...Dharan may be the only place on earth where SUN (GOLD) is sold like a SABJI, JAMIN MA display GARERA. AND SIDHRA BAZAR....DESHI LINE KO SUNGURKO MASHU BECHNE PASHALHARU.... There used to be a beautiful BAMBOO House restaurant in Deshi line. And NAVARATHA IN VIJAYPUR DADAMA...full of SEASONS and SIDE KHELA KHEL. Not to mention about HATTISAR (thanx vivid for photo)....never have enough of it even after spending more than a decade in college.
By the way you guys must be aware of www.dharanonline.com, HAINA?
bye

Sawadhan!!!

Wizard of oz,
lol! flashes of Bede's and Pandey's faces appeared before my eyes. Heard a lot about Nirmal but had no idea how he looks like.
Not only the Dharane football tournament ends up beating ref, read also in ANA tournament, :) so we are not the odd ones.

Finally the code, HK ..... it was really a famous code at one time, not only in cinemas even in colleges when you have to share a bench. heh! heh!

I was in Dharan a couple of times when I was a lil kid, fresh out of toddlerhood. But it was WAY back in the mid 80s. Dhuwa nikalne Chatpate khako yaad ayo bhai..... SOOO sad...:(((

I seem to be the only one with so little memories about Dharan. The place I love so much. I dont know if you guys would call me a Dharane. I was born there but I never spent more then a month in a year. But I still feel like a Dharane at heart. I also seem to be the most "shojho" among all the Dharanes since stayed out of trouble all the time.

Unbearable lightness of being: My Dharan

On trivial and lighter veins, many of you have tried to figure out the essence of Dharan. Having lived there all my formative years, there is no doubt that it is the city that is closest to my heart. I have many memories of this city - both sweet and sour, but always warm and endearing. I had written a series of poem on Dharan in my childhood. Some of them are lost and some of them - now I have found irrelevant. If any lurks in my mind, I will post in Sajha someday.

But instead of indulging in nostalgia, I am trying to understand and judge this city objectively. After thinking for sometime to sum up the inner quality of Dharan - the title of a Kundera's novel came in my mind. Yes, that's it: Dharan is the city where you immediately and immensely feel the joy and sorrow of unbearable lightness of being.

"Being" is not a philosophy there. You just live there watching the valuable(?) days go by. You live full of potentials but without the urge to bring them into reality. You just remain complacent, happy to remain the way you are.

While there are many external changes taking place in Dharan, it in essence, has always been the same. Always trying to adjust with the imported cultures of Nottingham Hill and Dhankute hills, it wakes up with the chimes of Dantakali Mandir bells and sleeps with the psychedelic tunes of Pink Floyd. It is a medley, a mosaic, always a hodgepodge, never in its entirety.

Living the spirit of Darjeeling, sipping the spirit of Denmark
It always tries to be others, the one that is not there.
It lives in dreams, mocking awakenings,
For dream here is more beautiful than elsewhere's reality.
TopGun Posted on 14-Jul-03 10:23 AM

Hi,
I was born, raised and done in Dharan. One of my oldest memories of Dharan were to do with some wierd characters.

One was a guy who was known as BARBARE. He would put peacock feathers in his head and go on speaking at every corner of Dharan about his own theories about the world, society and what not. He would go to the Bahun and Newar Tole and tell them in their face how oppressive they were and how they were going to be run over by the RAI, LIMBU soon! He theorized that America was hell bent on dropping the skylab in Nepal and thousands of people were going to die. I must admit I had quiet a few sleepless nights. Some people thought he was a Chinese spy :-)

Another was a psuedo-magician who would gather school kids around in the side of the main street and tell them he is going to do some cool magic. I waited hours for him to show me his goodies, however only thing he ever delivered was to balance a big piece of rock on a glass. Basically he was selling his Viagra pills.

Another was a guy called BALJITE who was rumored to be a great Goorkha fighter in the British Army but later had a mental breakdown as he was denied his honor. Whatever the truth, he was very very scary!!! Man, I would not get within 1 mile radius of that chap.

Have fun!

What about the Chhapriko Bangoor with Skin and Fat? And Sainik Hotelko Tongbaa?
biratnagare Posted on 14-Jul-03 10:30 AM

Contd:
To be a dharane, u must have traveled to Jogbani ( Germany ) Via Itahari ( Italy ), and Duhabi ( Dubai ) Biratnagar ( Beijing ) for a dial of Phensidil.

And must have had your jhyaple kal cut by local police. Ohhhhhhh I forgot the famous Dharane Academic destination : Birpur in Bihaar......

some more Dharane Criterias:

* BSC sir ko ma math tution padheko or Padhne koi chineko
* Bijaypur danda ma School bhagera hariyo kachho Aap( Mango ) chorne gayeko
* At least knows one Hamjayega joke

And some more Dharane vocabulary

GAS: means lover, mann parayeko keti/keta or simply ek patak boleko keti/keta depends upon kati ko BT ( Big talk) ho

Doctor: drug addicts( because they can inject at most unimaginable places)

Will add more as I remember..

Deep: As far as I know that place is called Zero point because Dharan. Dhankuta highway starts from that point. The measurement starts from that point. I remeber places in Kalimpong and around are called as Miles like 9 mile ko kaki . etc... ( suna correct me hai )

Last time when I went to a road trip, I could not resist mangling this perfectly fine song by John Denver and came up with this lyrics.
I do have a recording of my song but since I am not exactly a singer I assume that its not that you will enjoy. If any of you talent out there would like to give it a try, let me know :-)

Jhandai Sworga Dharan Shahar,
Bijaypur Dando, Sardu Khola
Jindagi Purano Chha, Bargachhi Bhanda Purano
Pahad Bhanda Naya, Hawa Jastai Bagdo
Mahendra Rajmarga, Malai Ghar Purya
Tyo Thau Jahabaata Ma Aako
Dharan Shahar Dantakali Maata
Malai Ghar Purya Mahendra Rajmarga

Mera Sabai Samjhanaharu Unkai Oripari
Lahure Ki Swasni Hongkong Kahile Nadekheki

Chandramako Nirmal Prakash Mero Ankhama Ashu
Mahendra Rajmarga, Malai Ghar Purya
Tyo Thau Jahanbaata Ma Aako
Dharan Shahar Dantakali Maata
Malai Ghar Purya Mahendra Rajmarga

Harek Bihani Ma Uni Le Bolayeko Swor Sunchhu
Internet Malai Tadhako Ghar Samjhai Rahanchha
Batoma Gadi Kudaunda Malai Yesto Lagchha
Ma Hijai Ghar Pugnu Parne Thiyo Hijai...

Doh = dont mistake it for Duh ! ..doh simply means money in dharane lang .
Sacri =this must have derived from english word Sacrifice . I cant find the exact
word for Sacri .But once when I was in school ,I was gobbling food as I was very hungry .my dharane friend came and said ." Aaaaaacch Bro ,Sacri dindai chau ni .

Anyone know the name of the Compounder?
sangam Posted on 15-Jul-03 09:28 AM

alnepali,

I think his name is Ashok Bhaduri (compounder)

Bad dept, huh? May be he will make you pay in $$ next time you make it home. :)
alnepali Posted on 15-Jul-03 09:41 AM

Sangam
That's him.. Ashok Compounder. His son, Shankhar, used to be a class mate
The last tyam I was at Dharan, didn't find Shivaji. Ghantaghar was under construction. We guys should gather to find a similar project as well. Dai from MN had originally come up with the thought and was able to give it a little start.
rai Posted on 15-Jul-03 10:03 AM

alnepali.

Even though everybody knows Ashok Bhaduri as compounder he is infacta doctor, did his MBBS from Calcutta. Shankar now works at BPKIHS as technician.. If shankar was your classmate, they you are also SBSer hoina?

When I was at Dharan ( about a year back) . I think Shivaji was still at his usual place at Singhadevi chowk.. Did he shift along with Balika school then ? any way the best of Shivaji Bhaiya was Dahibada..

Ghantaghar ko idea ta thikai ho but I think it is a pity to build it with Cement( 20:1). Hadda bhaye 20 barsa hola hoina Cement ko age.? Wish it was built with something permanent.

Sangam : who all are in Europe ? just curious..

I was also a classmate of Shankar Bhaduri. You should then know PK, Chandra, Griharaj, Khagen, Om et all...I remember all those folks with all their idiosyncrasies. Who can forget Mr Pagal Scientist?

I don't know how SBS is doing these days. Last time I went home, it was basically dying, unable to compete with other new kids in town. It would be a real fun to have a reunion of SBS-ites some time in future...

rai: Didn't know Ashok Compounder finally got his MBBS. I did meet Shankhar for a short moment last year but didn't get the tyam to catch up. He had a kid and all. Anyways, Didn't see Shivaji at the Stadium at the "Buda Subba Cup" either.

TopGun: I was Shankhar's classmate only for the third grade. Didn't go to SBS.

Sangam: Are you from Ward#16 (Janpath)?

Rai,

Let them speak for themselves.

Alnepali,

No, I am not from Janpath.
OU812 Posted on 15-Jul-03 01:39 PM

HI Vivid, Thanks for replying to the email. Since u conside me as a toddler in huggies, by implication the Samosa Ghugooni is out of the window. Better offer, if you happen to swing via belayat, will make you Canteen Miss style Aloo Chop and Matar Jhol. Got recipe of Canteen miss Son. :o)

Gokul Dai, Namaskar. Had the priviledge of one to one tuition with Bhandari Sir. Must say his penchant for poetry is in you. But I couldn't grasp his poetic flights though. Too high level. Heard you topped your University in Pakisthan. Respect!!

Rai ji, last time I was in dharan, I was shocked to see the face lift Naya Bazaar had received. More concrete jungle then Kaath ko Dokans. Does anyone remember Dinesh Emporium? Vidata Store (Excellent collection of English Audio Tapes), Shiva & Sons.

Domach? I swear I have seen that guy. He use to walk along Janpath in Army Green Trench Coat, Jeans, Basketball Shoes and tinted John Lennon Glass. Of course high on Phensi and Churpi in his mouth.

Top-Gun: "I don't know how SBS is doing these days. Last time I went home, it was basically dying, unable to compete with other new kids in town." The school died with the passing away of the eldest son, so I've heard.

Poonte Dai, once you get the taste of dharan, you will return for more. There is no stopping. Where in Nepal have you heard of Adam Teasing? I've said enuff

:o)
milans Posted on 15-Jul-03 02:32 PM

Hi all,

Nice to see you all sharing your thoughts about Dharan. Made me nostalgic.

Gokul: Basaai sareko dherai dhilo thaha paye. Kamsekam ek patak fon ta garnu parcha sarnu aghi. Anyway, I have been following your posts in sajha for awhile now. Keep it up.

Vivid: I like reading your musings and poems. Talk about SBS reminds me of (few out of many):
Bhandari sirko ukhaan, "atti ek garnu, atti dui garnu, atti tin garnu, tara atti char kahile nagarnu".

Nagendra sir and his english classes.

Shyam daiko Momos and Mohan bhaiyaako chaksala.

Class 8 dayscholors Vs. Borders football match.

alnepali: Sup brother? Ganesh's roof top sukuti bar re? Mukhamai paani aayo :)

Good to see you all in sajhaland.

Gokul Posted on 15-Jul-03 04:14 PM

OU812,
Where did you get that precious old photograph of our school? Do you recognize the person standing in the last row first from the left?
OU812 Posted on 15-Jul-03 04:27 PM

Gokul dai, in original photo, Ganga Sir, Sabtri (Sharma) Miss and Head miss are noticable. You think Bhandari Sir standing? Could be. The tradmark Nepali topi is clear :o)
Gokul Posted on 15-Jul-03 04:35 PM

Yes, that's him. I have this picture in Nepal. OU812, is it possible to let me know who you are and at the same time maintain your anonymity in Sajha? You can hint me through SBS-related stuffs.

OU812,

Wow!!! Classic pics. Any idea which year the first pic was taken? I wonder if I am in that pic. All the girls in the second pic are my classmates except Sanju. Brought back the memories of our scouting days. That picture must have been taken back in 82-83.
Aasha didi along with the Rajbhagat dai in the third pic. How did you get hold of these pics? Are you Atal by any chance? (just a huntch) Please share it with us if you have some more. I have few pics which were taken back in 82-83. I will post once I get a chance to scan them.

WOW again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OU812,

Give us some hints about your self too. I bet you are ATAL. Most probably the youngest one. Just YES or NO will do.

Vivid,

Third pic is of National Athletics meet held in KTM, most probably back in 81-82. Don't worry, I have one from our Birendra shield. Not from the parade ground tho. Yes, we have met before. Girls on the second pic are(from left to right): Shila, Rekha, Asha, Caroline, Pushpa, Sabina, Radha and Sajnu.

OU812:
Thanks for the photos. Brings back a lots of memories.. Except the small hill on the background of the photo nothing is same. The buildings end was on that Great Earthquake of 2045. and this part of land is no more SBS.

Scouting at SBS.. Do we remember THAPA sir? Scout teacher !! Heard that he is somewhere in Kathmandu with his own boarding school. I was in scout since my fourth grade. Still have that blood-red scarf with a white border.

and as far as I know all those shops you mentioned are still there . Bidhata store shifted to a new house. Shiva and Brothers are still at the same place but with a new section on the Mathillo talla. Dinesh emporium is still at the same place but with lots more varieties.

Sangam and Topgun:

Few years back there was a big get together of all the alumini at the school and we discussed about some alumni association with Headsir. Thing didnot move as most active of us were going abroad soon. But still I will be happy to see something like internet site, and will of course contribute my time and resources for that.

Milans

Dear AlNepali (is it Tika?), NINJA is working in a Nutrition project in Kath. Heard he no longer touches RAKSHI. He was the BOOZARDEST among us. His antics (after get drunk) are legendary. Rai and Vivid, BIDYARTHI of mine..huh Vivd, you must have done BTech, haina? Gokul... Shailesh told me about you moving to US as a EAST West Scholar (BIRSE exactly), have you finished PhD? By the way which state you are in? Do you know Rajesh has moved to NZ as a lecturer. You guys are really gem of Dharan. MAILE PANI YESO BASI BIYALO GARER PhD SAKE last year. Enjoying life in country Aussieland. Saw photos of BISHAL and BISHES in Sajha site (as usual he was playing guitar). .
Alnepali=Tika?? If so then heard that you are in Nepal at present. But, I'm still not convinced yet.

Ha! ha! NINJA re,(B.V. dai ??). It's really funny to know his nick after all these years but think the nick suits him fine.

May I ask who took that picture of Bhendetaar? I had the same picture sent by a friend some months back.
By any chance, are you in England?
Just trying to put the zig saw puzzels together, :)

Alnepali ji,
Thanks for the beutiful pictures of Dharan and the surroundings!
Sorry, it was not you for sure who sent me that picture. May be that picture of yours might have been circulated among dharanes then, ;)
Gave up putting the puzzels together as my only last piece got lost, :). The only thing I can conclude is that you must be a Hattisarian, am I right?
Do you also have a picture of Lathalinge raja ko bhatabunge darbaar? Would love to see it again.
Thanks!

OU812 Posted on 17-Jul-03 12:39 AM

LOL!! Bhatabhunge Durbar... I thought the ruins was fragment of my imagination from yester years. Been there so many times treasure hunting. :o)

alnepali, fantastic view from Bhedetar. Looks slightly touristy though. Is it true Prince Charlse climbed that spot? I use to wonder why on earth would he want to do that.

Jukhure Posted on 17-Jul-03 09:57 AM

'wizard of oz" Dai,
Long time no contact. Heard You moved to new place. Where? .....
About NINJA, I heard he has changed quite a bit after the accident.

Milans: Nice Pics. Is that Rita Limbu far left?

Gokul: Do u know where is Kuda now??
ou812 Posted on 17-Jul-03 09:58 AM

My guess is Milan Dai squatting second from right. So many familar faces but can't recall names. I know Sushma Didi 4th from right passed away, quite a while ago.

Is that Allen (Sundas) Dai front left? Damn, he was my guitar hero.

Supi Sir's name is Hermon Upadhya, now currently in Damak.

What is the Legend of Batabhunge Durbar? I haven't the faintest idea, but use to go there a lot as a kid. Near the palace there use to be a Boksi ko Ghar ... hehehe children's imagination.

Gokul Posted on 17-Jul-03 11:02 AM

Jukhure,
Who is Kuda? Got your email, will write to you later.

Wiz of Oz,
Have you purchased 2003's almanac?

Milan dai,

OU812,
I taught you after SLC ko janch diyera. Do you remember?
I noticed that you were once reading ZAMM. Interested to hear your comments. Planning to write a similar one but about the "metaphysics of information" instead.

Vivid,
Aren't you livid that your photo is online?

My classmates nicknames:

Baljite: Dhanjite now (earning lot of money nowadays)
Jeeray: No more jeeray, has become mote and aggressive as dalle pepper

Still can't figure out "Lathalinge raja ko bhatabunge darbaar" :o)
wizard of oz Posted on 18-Jul-03 02:02 AM

Dear Jukhure....You remind me of somebody. There used to be a small restaurant in the corner of Deshi line, called JUKHURE KO MOMO PASAL. Best MOMO PASAL in Dharan at one time. One plate MOMO for 3 Rupiya. However, their especiality was SUNGURKO KHUTTA...It was so YUMMY...The owner, of course, was JUKHURE, a replica of SAI BABA minus red robe. Later our ADDA moved to BUNU DIDIKO PASAL in JHAPADI ZILLA (the 76th district of NEPAL). She too used to serve YUMMY MOMMO, THUKPA and SUNGURKO MASU (in cheapest price). My stipends from Hattisar College were often spent to restaurants of Dharan for BOOZE party. None of my friends are were allowed to take stipends home. EKAI PATAKMA ISc pass GARDA MA AAFAI CHHAKKA PAREKO THIYE. AB TA PARDESMA MATRA YAD BAKI CHHA. YAHA TA KUKHURAKO MASUKO SWAD PANI BIRSI SAKYO. 'BIKASE' ChickenKO MAASU taste like bread.....Fed with feeds fortified with hormone and other growth stimulants....
Gokul: Yes I regulary buy Guinness Books and Almanacs. But thats mainly for my son who is now nine years old and goes to class 4.
Rai: Thanx for the mail. Hope you have already got mine too.
Thanks guys for the photos.
Keep this thread going.

Vivid,

Puri, julebi diet kaha birsinu. Thapa sirko gaali khadai kudnu parthiyo and only thing to look forward to after the run was puri, julebi. :) I still remeber all the guys and gals singing "Purba-aanchal ko ek matra, Dharan boarding school.. gyanko batti balideu boarding school, boarding school" on the way back home from Birendra shield in the bus along with several other Nepali, Hindi and English songs.

Does anyone remeber the morning prayer?

Talking about BUNA didi ko pasal........ mukhama paani aaucha. Tongba ani pork fry.. tetti bhaye aru ke chahiyo?
Hellbound Posted on 18-Jul-03 07:54 AM

Wow, those pictures are so cool. I also lived in Dharan in my childhood, but I barely remember a few things.

Several times, I had heard that Bhedetaar was very beautiful. now I can see the splendor authenticated by the picture. Wow.

Nice going guys:)

milans Posted on 18-Jul-03 01:16 PM

Himalayas,

Thanks. Most probably you are one of the very few who can recite the prayer.

Vivid,

Laaj pachaune kunai jaruri dekhadina. Chinnele chini halcha, nachinneko ke matlab, hoina? As for the morning prayer, I couldn't memorize even after 10.5 years in SBS. Every time Headsir called me out front for the prayer, I used to mumble just like rest of the students. :)

Duhabi ko Birendra shield ho.

rai,

I don't know any Bhupal G. S. from SBS. FYI: Picture was taken back in '83.
OU812 Posted on 18-Jul-03 01:37 PM

Gokul dai don't remember you teaching me. But Bhandari Sir sure did.
I have no comments on ZAMM, except it went zhyamma out of my window.
(sunbathing on my window sill to be precise). I first bought a copy of ZAMM
when i was in my late teens, didn't get thru the first page. Now,
I bought another copy and read it half way though. Too taxing.
When I am in my late 30's maybe I will complete it, and understand it in my 50's. By then it will be time to kick the bucket. (Taking into account average Nepalese lifespan)

Zen and philosopy in general. I guess one has to be mad enough or kicked about by life REALLY bad to understand it.
As the saying goes:
"If you fine a lovely girl, get married and live happily ever after.
If not, become a philosopher". I'd rather rescue princess Fiona,
locked up in the tallest tower guarded by fire-breathing dragon then maintain a motocycle and ride it into sunset. That summs up my view on philosophy.

"metaphysics of information" ?? Whoa!!!!! Can we eat it?

Milan dai, Hints allegations and things left unsaid. :o) Sabina didi ko photo post garum? With your permission of course, if not will email it to ya.

Rai chai ko ho? Chinina

Himalaya, after reading your postings in Jhyapali, I hacked it. Did we ever play cricket in Bhagwati? If you are in UK, we should meet up for a pint.
Thank you for the Prayer, coz I didn't know the pray in it's entirety.

You got on my nose. I used to play cricket from SBS and most of the time we used to play at Bhagwati during cricket season. Yes, we won the match organised by LIONS CLUB, just to give you hint.

I am in London. If we can join for a pint then it will be really great.....

I have my share of experience with Dharan. Used to write a coloumn for Blast newspaper. Have friends like Machendra Subba and others..
vivid Posted on 19-Jul-03 03:07 AM

KK ji,
Actually Dharan is considered as one of the most fertile place for newspapers to grow.
Blast is still alive and kicking. Have friends who write for The Blast.
Few national level reporters who started their journey from Dharan, are Shiva Gaunle, Tika Ram Bhattarai, Som Luintel et al.
Also, how can we not mention the famous film maker Nabin Subba who started his journey also from Dharan.
This much I know.
Which Machendra Subba? I know 2 one a reporter and the other a guitarist.

Vivid I am creature of senses. I have done the Sight and taste of Dharan. Now it's time for sound. Since Dharane's can see music and hear colour, I am sure bros and sis will be able to remember this following tune:

vivid Posted on 19-Jul-03 04:40 AM

OU812,
How about giving this thread your tune, as in

Going through this thread it appears like we all need a "dedicated web site" for Dharanes. After consulting with Dharanes at Chicago, Minneapolis and Birmingham AL, the domain name "mydharan.com" has been registered. We hope to make it available soon.... Please stay tuned

Suggestions and Help, are all very welcome...

Rastafariya bro, which badmaas type Anil Rai are you talkin about? Is that khajure from Bhotepul ? If thats him then, I think he is the new Domuch bro now, there's a lot of jokes about him.
wizard of oz Posted on 25-Jul-03 02:58 AM

Dear Tulip, welcome to Dharane World in Sajha. Do we know each other? Thanx alnepali for launching Dharan web page. Its great idea. I think we PARDESHI DHARANE should have one. By the way www.dharanonline.com is not working from last week. Do anybody has any idea?
Thanx
vivid Posted on 25-Jul-03 03:02 AM

WoO,
No idea.
I tried visiting yesterday, but to no avail.
How's the peanut going?
:)
wizard of oz Posted on 25-Jul-03 04:04 AM

Vivid, our company handles about 100 tons of peanut each. There is peanuts everywhere. I used to work in a brewery (STAR BEER) in NEPAL. TYO DINHARU SAMJHADAI BASCHHU. I think dharanonline has become defunct. It was really a very good site for us. Vivid, you can write me mail in following add: abhigya@hotmail.com
Abhigya is my son's name.
sangam Posted on 25-Jul-03 07:24 AM

dogz,

I think rastafariya is talking about a different Anil Rai. By the way I didn't know that Khajure's name is Anil Rai. Well, one learns something new everyday. Please do share some dharane piece (jokes, euta piece sunne ho bro bhaneko ta thaha nai hola) with us.

www.dharanonline.com was a okay site. Too much information crammed into a static page. Daily news updates once in a month. Forums unmoderated and full of filth. However, I do like to thank Sudhir for taking initiative.

alnepali,

mydharan.com ko chaapri tira bhet hola, tongba tandai, sungur ko masu fadkaudai. :)
alnepali Posted on 25-Jul-03 08:06 AM

Wizard of Oz:
Dunno what happened to dharanonline.com The domain name is still registered and does not expire until September. My assumption, since Tika left for Nepal for good (from what I hear), it might have lost some funding. However, we would love to get access to all the information gathered by them.

Sangam: see you at "Sukuti Ganesh" soon :o).
Tulip Posted on 25-Jul-03 09:29 AM

Thanks for the welcome vivid and sangam. I am not active sajha reader...I just peek now and then to see whats going on (esp pictures). I must say, this is very interesting..to talk to people ananomously. Yes Wiz dai, we know each other pretty well. You were the first 'sir' to show us chemistry experiment at SBS. quite impressive..donno what class i was in then. how is ranjeeta? so u settled in aus?

la ta la, aba feri kura gardai garumla dharane daju bhai didi bahini haru. I wonder who is vivid...just curious..
vivid Posted on 25-Jul-03 09:52 AM

Tulip,
If you really want to know who I am, just click on my name and send me a mail. We both shared the same memory lanes from SBS and Hattisaar. Maybe a few years apart.:)

Sangam,
What you said about dharanonline.com is true. Hope from that mydharan.com will come out clean regarding filthy and racial gali galauj.
Tyo chapri ma Tongba napiune lai aru kehi byawasta cha ki, :P (in jest).

Alnepali,

On the contrary. Its me who treats people. Wanna have your whole psychological profile( online) ? ...he he ..Got some Freudian theory to match you!!!

Another possible way to go to Ranchi.. There was a direct flight from Biratnagar to Patna , hoina?

Tulip:

My great amnestic capability always supports me ,thats why I cant remember Wiz comming to SBS for chemistry teaching!! It was always Bimal sir ( 6 auanle, sorry Bimal sir)for all , from Darwins theory to Solute and solvent.Thats why I thought you MIGHT be younger than me . Any way Sorry hai DAI/DIDI.
OU812 Posted on 25-Jul-03 12:18 PM

Sorry Milan dai, hadn't checked email in 2 days. Thanks for the pic. The heavenly picnic in kholas..............

Vivid and Tulip, it use to be 6 degrees of seperation, now you two can define "Sajha Degree of seperation"
OU812 Posted on 25-Jul-03 12:28 PM

Rai bhai, a psycological profile on me? mmmmm Interesting. It wasn't me who skinned all those girls. I promise. Don't want Agent Starling on my trail now, do we? However, it would be interested in what you have to say. Do email me please. You might just be able to shed some light on the dark side of the moon, why the sea is boiling hot and whether pigs have wings.

If you are not able to then I just might have your liver with some flava beans and Clienti... Seeehhhh...seeeehhhh..... seeeeehhhh""
vivid Posted on 25-Jul-03 01:45 PM

Rock n roll, sungur ko masu pol!, :P
When OU812 is around the thread becomes merrier( doesn't mean that it was not in his absence but he brings forth the laughter along with his mischievious grin, :D)
Hey did u say MIC? I was also there in my last visit to Dharan (2yrs ago). As you know Sudhir, do you also know Tuta?? Me, ate those seculant momos at the restaurant downstairs.
I think I should redifine 'Sajha degree of cohesion' rather than separation, NO?? what u say Milan dai??
Seems like Hannibal on the run.........would love to disect the file from Agent Railing, ke cha ho tyesto psyco analysis??? hamilai pani sunam na, ;)

Rai,
Ur great amnestic capability fails you there also, :P. Poor Rai bhai, kahile aune ho dai banne din, heh! heh!

Milan dai,
Rajin?? the one in the picture ho??
Ninja was a real ninja ni but at present he is no ninja anymore, :( Those who went to Hattisaar do know him I bet. Tulip if you know his name, you will definitely know him.

I think now i also have to define 'sajha degree of addiction'.

Tulip Posted on 25-Jul-03 03:38 PM

Oh well, rai bhai, you are very young among this crowd if you hadn't taken wiz dai's chemistry class. ;P. just kidding...Wiz dai's teaching was very brief so not everyone remembers him unless you have a personal connection. ke bho ta, hami lai pani bimal sir yaad chha.
Anyways, I just thinking of khola picnics in dharan few days ago. Only in Dharan, we can sit on back of the truck and drive to the khola....right?
OU812 Posted on 25-Jul-03 08:34 PM

Thanks vivid, should I take my mischievious grin as a compliment? My nose size has increased to size D..... :D) khiiiii.....teeee.....teeee

Yes I know Tuta (College days in United States Of India) and Madan too. Had those succulent momos .... ryaaaaaaaallllll I was in dharan 2 years back as well. Were you that PYT sitting in the office of MIC? My My what a sight, I was puffing away like a chimney to soothe my nerves. Mutu Dhuk Dhuk. Wipishhhhhhhh Down boy... Behave!!

Himalaya, thanks for buzzing. C U around

So when is Sajha Picnic?
wizard of oz Posted on 26-Jul-03 12:01 AM

Thanx vivid for your mail. I should have guessed.....
Dear Rai Bhai, you were in junior primary when I was teaching chemistry in SBS. It was around 1984-85. I was very bored with my B.Tech. and left it for teaching. But my conscience prevailed and I went back to hattisar after 2 months of teaching in SBS. I noticed you while running quiz competition in Dharan, you were (are) really good. Hattisar connected us later.
Tulip, you know a lot about me and even Ranjeeta. I have some guess....Are you V. M., doing PhD somewhere in US? Vivid, I don't think its M.S. (A).
Jukhure, I too want to know about my friend DIPAK (DAI) RAJ RAI (it must be the same person), a hattisarian. A real gentleman.

THE SMELL OF LOVE
By Furlow, F. Bryant -- Publication Date: Mar/Apr 96

Summary: Focuses on how the human body odor influences sexual attraction. Types of odors; Discussion on pheromone; Scent and sentiments; Notion that animal senses play a role in personal attraction; Selection of a genetically compatible partner; Need to evaluate a potential mate's merits.

fter long dismissing the search for a human pheromone as folly, scientists have begun to take a second look at how human body odor influences sexual attraction. The magic scent is not some romantic elixir but the aromatic effluence of our immune system. The only trouble is we don't give it half a chance.

How do we humans announce, and excite, sexual availability? Many animals do it with their own biochemical bouquets known as pheromones. "Why do bulls and horses turn up their nostrils when excited by love?" Darwin pondered deep in one of his unpublished notebooks. He came to believe that natural selection designed animals to produce two, and only two, types of odors--defensive ones, like the skunk's, and scents for territorial marking and mate attracting, like that exuded by the male musk deer and bottled by perfumers everywhere. The evaluative sniffing that mammals engage in during courtship were clues that scent is the chemical equivalent of the peacock's plumage or the nightingale's song--finery with which to attract mates.

In the following century, a rich array of animal pheromones were documented for seals, boars, rodents, and all manner of other critters. But not for human beings.

Some of Darwin's contemporaries embraced human uniqueness in this regard as evidence of our inevitable ascendance, as if Nature's Plan somehow called for the evolution of a nearly naked two-legged primate with a poor sense of smell to conquer the Earth. The French physician Paul Broca--noting that primates' social olfactory abilities are diminished compared to those of other mammals--asserted that monkeys, apes, and humans represent ascending steps from four-legged sniffing beasts to sight-oriented bipeds.

Monkeys, he argued, have smaller "smell brains" than other mammals, and apes' brains are even smaller than that. Among humans, only the tribal "primitives," Broca wrote, could still attach erotic import to the bodily smells of man.

More enlightened researchers dismissed such views as racist tripe. But they still noted that humans engage in very little scent-driven socializing--compared to, say, the urine-washing displays of monkeys (during which urine is rubbed on the feet to attract mates).

To make matters worse, humans seemed to lack the hardware for communicating by scent Pheromone reception in other species is the business o[ two little pits (one in each nostril) known collectively as the vomeronasal organ (VNO). Few scientists of the time claimed to have been able to locate a human VNO. Those who did complained that the VNO is so small that they could detect it only rarely.

Bhunte Posted on 27-Jul-03 06:04 AM

But most scientists, without bothering to look, simply dismissed the idea of a VNO in humans. It's been scientific dogma for most of this century that humans do not rely on scent to any appreciable degree, and that any VNOs found are vestigial throwbacks. Then, in the 1930s, physiologists declared that humans lack the brain part to process VNO signals, firmly closing the book on any role for body odor in human sexual attraction. Even if we had a VNO, the thinking was, our brains wouldn't be able to interpret its signals.

Recent discoveries suggest, however, that the reports of our olfactory devolution have been greatly exaggerated.

Some suspected as much the whole time. Smell researchers Barbara Sommerville and David Gee of the University of Leeds in England observed that smelling one another's hands or faces is a nearly universal human greeting. The Eskimo kiss is not just a rubbing of noses but a mutual sniffing. "Only in the Western world," the researchers point out, "has it become modified to a kiss." Hands and faces may be significant choices for these formalities--they are the two most accessible concentrations of scent glands on the human body besides the ears.

* SCENT AND SENTIMENT

Curiously, remembering a smell is usually difficult--yet when exposed to certain scents, many people--of whom Proust is the paragon--may suddenly recall a distant childhood memory in emotionally rich detail. Some aromas even affect us physiologically Laboratory researchers exploring human olfaction have found that:

* A faint trace of lemon significantly increases people's perception of their own health.

* Lavender incense contributes to a pleasant mood--but it lowers volunteers' mathematical abilities.

* A whiff of lavender and eucalyptus increases people's respiratory rate and alertness.

* The scent of phenethyl alcohol (a constituent of rose oil) reduces blood pressure.

Such findings have led to the rapid development of an aromatherapy industry. Aromatherapists point to scientific findings that smell can dramatically affect our moods as evidence that therapy with aromatic oils can help buyers manage their emotional lives.

Mood is demonstrably affected by scent. But scientists have found that, despite some extravagant industry promises, the attraction value in perfumes resides strictly in their pleasantness, not their sexiness. So far, at least, store-bought scent is more decoration than mood manager or love potion. A subtle "look this way" nudge to the nose, inspiring a stranger's curiosity, or at most a smile, is all perfume advertisers can in good conscience claim for their products--not overwhelming and immediate infatuation.

Grandiose claims for the allure of a bottled smell are not new. In their haste to mass-market sexual attraction during the last century, perfumers nearly drove the gentle musk deer extinct. In Victorian England, a nice-smelling young lady with financial savvy could do a brisk business selling handkerchiefs scented with her body odor.

So it should come as no surprise that when physiologists discovered a functioning vomeronasal organ inside the human nose, it was a venture capitalist intent on cashing in on manufactured human pheromone who funded the team's research. That was less than a decade ago. Using high-tech microscope probes that were unavailable to VNO hunters earlier in the century, a team led by Luis Monti-Bloch of the University of Utah found a tiny pair of pits, one in each nostril, snuggled up against the septum an inch inside the nose.

The pits are lined with receptor cells that fire like mad when presented with certain substances. Yet subjects report that they don't smell a thing during such experiments. What they often do report is a warm, vague feeling of well-being.

And the olfactory bulb that neurophysiologists couldn't find in the 1930s isn't absent in human brains at all, researchers recently discovered. It's just so enveloped by the massive frontal cortex that it's very difficult to find. This finding, coupled with the discovery of a functional human VNO, has ushered in a new chapter of the story of a human pheromone.

* THE GREAT PHEROMONE HUNT

For an animal whose nose supposedly plays no role in sexual attraction or social life, human emotions are strongly moved by smells. And we appear to be profoundly overequipped with smell-producing hardware for what little sniffing we have been thought to be up to. Human sweat, urine, breath, saliva, breast milk, skin oils, and sexual secretions all contain scent-communicating chemical compounds. Zoologist Michael Stoddart, author of The Scented Ape (Cambridge University Press, 1991), points out that humans possess denser skin concentrations of scent glands than almost any other mammal. This makes little sense until one abandons the myth that humans pay little attention to the fragrant or the rancid in their day-to-day lives.

Part of the confusion may be due to the fact that not all smells register in our conscious minds. When those telltale scents were introduced to the VNO of human subjects, they didn't report smelling anything--but nevertheless demonstrated subtle changes in mood.

What could be a source of what might be our very own pheromone?

Humans possess three major types of skin glands--sebaceous glands, eccrine (or sweat) glands, and apocrine glands. Sebaceous glands are most common on the face and forehead but occur around all of the body's openings, including eyelids, ears, nostrils, lips, and nipples. This placement is particularly handy, as the secretions of these glands kill potentially dangerous microorganisms. They also contain fats that keep skin supple and waterproof and, on the downside, cause acne. Little is known, however, about how sebaceous glands contribute to human body odor.

The sweat glands exude water and salt and are non-odorous in healthy people. That leaves the third potential source of a human pheromone--the apocrine gland. Apocrine glands hold special promise as the source of smells that might affect interpersonal interactions. They do not serve any temperature-managing functions in people, as they do in other animals. They occur in dense concentrations on hands, cheeks, scalp, breast areolas, and wherever we possess body hair--and are only functional after puberty, when we begin searching for mates.

Men's apocrine glands are larger than women's, and they secrete most actively during times of nervousness or excitement. Waiting colonies of bacteria turn apocrine secretions into the noxious fumes that keep deodorant makers in business. Hair provides surface area from which apocrine smells can diffuse--part of the reason why hairier men smell particularly pungent. (Is it any coincidence that hair at the arm pit and the genitals sprouts at puberty, when apocrine glands start producing food for our skin bacteria?)

Most promising all, apocrine glands exude odorous steroids known to sexual behavior in other mammals. Androsterone--a steroid related to the one that nearly doomed the hapless musk deer--is one such substance. Men secrete more androsterone than women do, and most men become unable to detect the stuff right around the time they start producing it themselves--at puberty.

In 1986, the National Geographic Society organized the World Smell Survey to investigate whether people from all cultures experience odor in the same fashion. They distributed over a million scratch-and-sniff cards and questionnaires about subjects' detection and perceptions of intensity of smells, from banana to the sulfur compounds added to natural gas as a warning agent. Included in the survey was the scent of human androsterone.

The steroid itself is not pleasant to smell. Worldwide, those who could smell it rated it second to last in pleasantness--just ahead of the sulfur compounds put in natural gas. A foul-smelling pheromone? It's hardly what scientists expected to find.

Bhunte Posted on 27-Jul-03 06:06 AM

* ANTI-PHEROMONES?

Despite the poor showing of androsterone in smell ratings, Karl Grammer of Austria's Institute for Human Biology thought it might be the sought-after human pheromone and studied women's reactions to it. He expected to find that women have a strong, favorable reaction to the smell of androsterone around ovulation, when their sense of smell becomes more acute and when they are most likely to conceive. Changes in their bodies' estrogen levels around ovulation, Grammer suspected, may change how women react to androsterone's smell.

He found that women's reactions to androsterone indeed change around ovulation--but not in the manner he expected. Instead of attraction, Grammer's ovulating volunteers shrugged their shoulders and reported Androsterone, it seems, offers little hope to men looking for a $19.95 solution to their dating slumps.

* OF MICE AND MEN

The empirical proof of odor's effect on human sexual attraction came out of left field. Medical geneticists studying inheritance rules for the immune system, not smell physiologists, made a series of crucial discoveries that nobody believed were relevant to human mate preferences--at first.

Research on tissue rejection in organ transplant surgery patients led to the discovery that the body recognizes an alien presence (whether a virus or a surgically implanted kidney) because the body's own cells are coated with proteins that our immune system recognizes as "self." But the immune system gets a lot more subtle about recognizing "nonself" intruders. It can recognize specific types of disease organisms, attach protein identifiers to them, and muster antibodies designed specifically for destroying that particular disease. And it can "remember" that particular invader years later, sending out specific antibodies to it.

A segment of our DNA called the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) codes for some of these disease-detecting structures, which function as the immune system's eyes. When a disease is recognized, the immune system's teeth--the killer T cells--are alerted, and they swarm the intruders, smothering them with destructive enzymes.

Unlike many genes, which have one or two alternative versions (like the genes that code for attached or unattached ear lobes), MHC genes have dozens of alternatives. And unlike earlobe genes, in which the version inherited from one parent dominates so that the version inherited from the other parent is not expressed, MHC genes are "co-dominant." This means that ira lab mouse inherits a version of an MHC gene for resistance to Disease A from its mother and a version lending resistance to Disease B from its father, that mouse will be able to resist both diseases.

When a female mouse is offered two suitors in mate choice trials, she inevitably chooses to mate with the one whose MHC genes least overlap with her own. It turns out that female mice evaluate males' MHC profile by sniffing their urine. The immune system creates scented proteins that are unique to every version of each MHC gene. These immune by-products are excreted from the body with other used-up chemicals, allowing a discerning female to sniff out exactly how closely related to her that other mouse is.

By choosing MHC-dissimilar mates, a female mouse makes sure that she doesn't inbreed. She also secures a survival advantage for her offspring by assuring that they will have a wider range of disease resistance than they would had she mated with her brother.

It's not that she seeks out diverse MHC genes for her young on purpose, of course. Ancestral females who preferred the smell of closely related males were simply outrun through evolutionary time by females who preferred the scent of unrelated sires.

Bhunte Posted on 27-Jul-03 06:07 AM

* CAN YOU SMELL THAT SMELL?

Since humans show little interest in one another's urine, few researchers thought that the story of MHC in rodent attraction could shed light on human interactions. But then someone made an eyebrow-raising discovery: Human volunteers can discriminate between mice that differ genetically only in their MHC. If human noses could detect small differences in the immune systems of mice (mice!) by giving the critters a sniff, excited researchers realized, we may well be able to detect the aromatic by-products of the immune system in human body odor as well!

A team led by Claus Wedekind at the University of Bern in Switzerland decided to see whether MHC difference. men's apocrine gland secretions affected women's ratings on male smells. The team recruited just under 100 college students. Males and females were sought from different schools, to reduce the chances that they knew each other. The men were given untreated cotton T-shirts to wear as they slept alone for two consecutive nights. They were told not to eat spicy foods; not to use deodorants, cologne, or perfumed soaps; and to avoid smoking, drinking, and sex during the two-day experiment. During the day, their sweaty shirts were kept in sealed plastic containers.

And then came the big smell test. For two weeks prior, women had used a nasal spray to protect the delicate mucous membranes lining the nose. Around the time they were ovulating (when their sense of smell is enhanced), the women were put alone in a room and presented with boxes containing the male volunteers' shirts. First they sniffed a new, unworn shirt to control for the scent of the shirts themselves. Then the women were asked to rate each man's shirt for "sexiness," "pleasantness," and "intensity of smell."

* SEXY GENES

It was found, by Wedekind and his team, that how women rate a man's body odor pleasantness and sexiness depends upon how much of their MHC profile is shared. Overall, women prefer those scents exuded by men whose MHC profiles varied the most from their own. Hence, any given man's odor could be pleasingly alluring to one woman, yet an offensive turnoff to another.

Raters said that the smells they preferred reminded them of current or ex-lovers about twice as often as did the smells of men who have MHC profiles similar to their own, suggesting that smell had played a role in past decisions about who to date. MHC-similar men's smells were more often described as being like a brother's or father's body odor . . . as would be expected if the components of smell being rated are MHC determined.

Somewhat more surprising is that women's evaluations of body odor intensities did not differ between MHC-similar and MHC-dissimilar men. Body scent for MHC-dissimilar men was rated as less sexy and less pleasant the stronger it was, but intensity did not affect the women's already low ratings for MHC-similar men's smells.

That strong odor turned raters off even with MHC-dissimilar men may be due to the fact odor is a useful indicator of disease. From diabetes to viral infection to schizophrenia, unusually sweet or strong body odors are a warning cue that ancestral females in search of good genes for their offspring may have been designed to heed. (In the case of schizophrenia, the issue is confounded--while some schizophrenics do actually have an unusually sweet smell, many suffer from delusions of foul smells emanating from their bodies.)

Nobody yet knows what roles MHC may play in male evaluations of female attractiveness. Females' superior sense of smell, however, may well be due to their need to more carefully evaluate a potential mates merits--a poor mate choice for male ancestors may have meant as little as a few minutes wasted, whereas a human females mistake could result in a nine-month-long "morning after" and a child unlikely to survive.

Perfumers who really want to provide that sexy allure to their male customers will apparently need to get a genetic fingerprint of the special someone before they can tailor a scent that she will find attractive. But before men contemplate fooling women in this way, they should consider the possible consequences.

Bhunte Posted on 27-Jul-03 06:07 AM

* FOOLING MOTHER NATURE

The Swiss researchers found that women taking oral contraceptives (which block conception by tricking the body into thinking it's pregnant) reported reversed preferences, liking more the smells that reminded them of home and kin. Since the Pill reverses natural preferences, a woman may feel attracted to men she wouldn't normally notice if she were not on birth control--men who have similar MHC profiles.

The effects of such evolutionary novel mate choices can go well beyond the bewilderment of a wife who stops taking her contraceptive pills and notices her husband's "newly" foul body odor. Couples experiencing difficulty conceiving a child--even after several attempts at tubal embryo transfer--share significantly more of their MHC than do couples who conceive more easily These couples' grief is not caused by either partner's infertility, but to an unfortunate combination of otherwise viable genes.

Doctors have known since the mid-1980s that couples suffering repeated spontaneous abortions tend to share more of their MHC than couples for whom pregnancies are carried to term. And even when MHC-similar couples do successfully bring a pregnancy to term, their babies are often underweight.

The Swiss team believes that MHC-related pregnancy problems in humans are too widespread to be due to inbreeding alone. They argue that in-couple infertility problems are due to strategic, unconscious "decisions" made by women bodies to curtail investment in offspring with inferior immune systems--offspring unlikely to have survived to adulthood in the environments of our evolutionary past.

When Broca and other social Darwinists pointed out that "uncivilized races" were more sensitive to body odor, they may have been correct--insofar as Europeans tend to go to greater lengths to perfume and wash away their natural scents. But this is hardly evidence of European superiority over "less evolved" peoples, as Broca insisted. Paying careful attention to the health of others and their suitability as sires to one's offspring in the disease-rich tropics, whose cultures Broca derided, actually makes exceedingly good sense.

Perfume; daily, soapy showers; convenient contraceptive pills---all have their charms. But they also may be short-circuiting our own built-in means of mate choice, adaptations shaped to our unique needs by millions of years of ancestral adversities. The existence of couples who long for children they cannot have indicates that the Western dismissal of body scent is scarcely benign.

Those who find offensive the notion that animal senses play a role in their attraction to a partner need not worry As the role of smell in human affairs yields to understanding, we see not that we are less human but that our tastes and emotions are far more complex and sophisticated than anyone ever imagined.

PHOTOS (BLACK & WHITE)

Get a Whiff of the Myths!

Humans have smaller "smell brains" than the rest of the animal kingdom.

Oops. The olfactory bulb has been there all along. It's just that it's hard to find, buried in folds and folds of the frontal cortex.

Okay, but we're above scent-driven socialization.

Left to its own devices, body scent plays a large and very clever role in mate attraction.

The sexiest smells humans produce are related to the sex hormones.

Actually, the body scents important in mate attraction are--this even surprised researchers--aromatic by-products of the immune system.

Each of us has a unique "smellprint" that is equally appealing to all others.

How pleasant and sexy our body odors are is a totally relative matter. We smell best to a person whose genetically based immunity to disease differs most from our own.

The notion that animal senses play a role in personal attraction diminishes our humanity.

Scientific understanding of the role of smell in our lives leads only to conclusions that our tastes and emotions are highly sophisticated, the product of many inputs.

HOW TO SMELL A MATE

How does body odor affect a woman's sexiness? Scientists don't for sure, but they do know that a man's allure depends in part on how many immune system genes he shares with a potential mate.

Since it's known that women can detect genetic compatibility by smell--it's not that men can't but that so far no one knows--the onus is on females to sniff out a suitable squire.

Choosing a genetically compatible partner can be difficult it today's perfume rich postindustrial jungle, and getting your immune system genes profiled can be expensive. Before you run to a doctor for blood work to see whether your mate is a suitable match--and sire for your future children--try listening to your nose. (Unfortunately, the sniff test will only work if you're not taking birth control pills.)

* 1. Declare a deception-free day for the nostrils. Have your beau shower with fragrance-free soap and wear clean cotton clothing for a day, away from smokers and the perfumed masses. Be sure you don't have a cold, and that you yourself haven't been around smokers for a few days.

* 2. After he spends a day and a night in his cotton clothes, before he tosses them in the direction of the hamper, wrestle them from him and have a "smelldown." Make it a romantic experience. If your man's shirt doesn't offend, you should be safe. (Find the scent alluring or sexy? Even better! That attraction is nature's way of telling you he's a safe contributor to your offspring's genetic ensemble.)

* 3. If your man's odor reminds you of your father or of a brother, you may want to consider getting in touch with your doctor and ask about genetic tests before trying to conceive a child. Tell the doctor you're concerned that you may share a close MHC or "HLA" profile. (HLA, for human leukocyte antigen, is a technical tag for human MHC.) Meanwhile, a deceptively pleasing gift of cologne might be in order.

* 4. Genetic incompatibility is not the only reason you may find his odor offensive. Does his body scent seem unusually intense? He might have a medical condition that explains the smell. Ask him to bring it up at his next medical checkup. A very sweet scent is sometimes evidence of diabetes or schizophrenia--both of which appear to be heritable. It is wise to discuss these issues with each other, and with a doctor, before having kids.

* 5. Before you decide that your relationship stinks, check your mate's diet. A taste for spicy foods or an overindulgence in garlic can cause strong body odors.

* 6. If your mate still offends, don't head for the hills just yet. Some clothing detergents can prove to be a bad mix with a fella's scent. Ask that the next time he visits the laundry, he change brands--and give the stinker a second chance!--F.B.F.

F. Bryant Furlow

When a Kiss Is Not a Kiss!

The Eskimo kiss is a rubbing of noses.

In really it is a case of mutual sniffing of body smells. Only in the Western world has mutual sniffing been reprogrammed to a kiss.

We humans are smell poor, possessing less hardware for smelling than other animals.

Recent findings demonstrate that we have lots of scent-related equipment.

People pay little attention to the fragrant or the rancid in their everyday lives.

Human sweat, urine, breath, saliva, breast milk, skin oils, and sexual secretions all contain scent-laden chemical compounds. Part of the problem is that not all smells register in our conscious mind--although they may nonetheless influence mood.

Vivid, yes..the knit is becoming tighter and I am threatened! Strange I knew right away you were a female. This is to erudite female poets at sajha (sorry I don't know all of them yet besides sitara and vivid)

Poets make pets of pretty, docile words:
I love smooth words, like gold-enamelled fish
Which circle slowly with a silken swish,
And tender ones, like downy-feathered birds:
Or purring softly at a silver dish,
Blue Persian kittens fed on cream and curds.

I love bright words, words up and singing early;
Words that are luminous in the dark, and sing;
Warm lazy words, white cattle under trees;
I love words opalescent, cool, and pearly,
Like midsummer moths, and honied words like bees,
Gilded and sticky, with a little sting.

Alas...I wish I was a good writer.
Deepak raj rai must be from SBS.
Wiz dai, I am not sure who you are talking about ;). So far so good..life is rolling. keep me posted and keep on posting! will be back soon.

najar Posted on 28-Jul-03 07:33 AM

Surprises await leaving some threads unopened...

lol at Sitara and Vivid's exchanges upon unfolding Vivid's gender. Aww, Sitara dear--all along, you were thinking Vivid was a male? :)) Malai ta pahilaa nai thha thhyo, came to know few months ago, although before that i too thought she was a male (no offense hai vivid, you just would not give enough clue to imply you were a female, not that it matters!) Nevertheless, have been enjoying Vivid's postings for long even before identifying her gender :)

Dharane biraders and sistas great goign here hai...me too am trying to persuade my chhimeki to start our thread reminiscing the time and place we grew up at, but so far there are just two of us (sajhaites) or atleast that i know of....don't think we'd have much luck getting anywhere close to you guys, but am thoroughly enjoying my revisit, albeit cyber to dharan. Had gone there once for a brief visit, which i greatly cherish! Hope to make a longer visit sometime in future--infact this thread has further strenghthened my desire to visit Dharan! Will any of you be there sometime soon? :)
kalankisthan Posted on 28-Jul-03 08:23 AM

VIVID is a female?

uh-oh!!!
vivid Posted on 28-Jul-03 10:06 AM

Tulip,
Welcome to the club!
Wow! an entrance with a big bang!
Love thy peom, filled with fluffy words and embossed phrases.
Hope to hear more from you.
Have you visited mydharan.com? Do visit. Maybe we'll bump into each other there also, ;)

Najar and Kalanki jis,
My pleasure to know you both as hasthis of sajhapuri nagari.
No objection from my side as I longed to remain genderless in the cyberworld but not anymore, :(
Tulip Posted on 29-Jul-03 08:13 AM

Vivid,
I had written a long email to you. I visited mydharan.com but still need to familiarize myself. WEll, this post is an effort to keep the thread going.

ciao.

TopGun Posted on 30-Jul-03 10:18 AM

In the interest of keeping this thead going, here is my Top 10 reasons to know if you are a Dharane:

1) You have been scolded by a nasally challenged clerk in the Dharan post office. Does any body know his name?
2) You know who Kaag (Crow) is?
3) Your daily schedule involves at least three rounds of visit to the local Chaata Chowk.
4) You have seen Radha Sir diagnosing, prescribing and selling medicines for cardio-vascular complications.
5) Rocky Bro knows you.
6) You have wondered why Shyam Dai's Dokan is frozen in time?
7) You have attended a Kabi Gosti organised by some Palikhe guy.
8) You think getting a job at BPKIHS is the ultimate measure of success.
9) You have had tuition sessions with Bimal Sir but later switched to BSc sir.
10) You think Baje Ko Chiya has aphrodisiac value.
sangam Posted on 30-Jul-03 02:57 PM

Kabi Badri Palikey. Thats his name. How about a beer or two at Bhanu chowk's cold drink store? That used to be a very good place for some people watching (a better term for season:)) Oh! those days are all gone.

Dharan municipality should plan a sort of like a town square at Bhanu chowk. Jamanama aalakatre bato bannu aghiko dhunge bato jastai dhunga aathawa itta bichayera chittika parnu parne. That bus stand needs to be moved out of there. Ekdamai sano thau bhayo.
vivid Posted on 31-Jul-03 05:04 PM

Sangam,
Yeah Badri Palikhe. To name a few kabi/kabiyatrees from dharan: Krishna Pakhrin, Kunta Sharma, Leela Shrestha Subba, Harsha Subba etc....

What happened to the plan to shift the Bus stand from Bhanu chowk to somewhere near that petrol pump?

Do anyone remember the Prakash cold store at Bhanu chowk? My fav place to drink a coke while viewing at customers bargaining for churpis and fruits.

Hey where is everybody?? OU812, Tulip, Alnepali, WoO, Jukhure, Milan, Gokul et al.....

Vivid,

Sannata chayeko chaina. Bhunte ra Neural le dharane "juwai" bhanne aashama halla gardai cha.

Yeah, that Bus Stand needs to go. For years I have been hearing about bus stand move, but till today there aren't any plan for it yet. Its partly to blame on local politics. Every ward leader wants the bus stand to be moved to their ward, hoping for economic benefits. Watd no. 13 wants Dhankuta busstand, Ward no. 7 and 8 wants the other bus stand. Tana-taan. Baru dori tanne khel khelaunu parne... jasle jitcha tesle lancha.. hoina? Aaakhir Drabya Shahle daud jitera raja huna paucha bhane yesma ke nai farak cha ra? :-)
explorer Posted on 01-Aug-03 09:42 AM

TopGun,
I like what you said.....that was really funny.....and all true. U are are not from ward #4 or 5 by any chance, are you?
Tulip Posted on 01-Aug-03 12:14 PM

Where was baje ko chiya? I know shyam dai ko pasal, but who is kaag, radha sir and rocky bro :( ???? i maynot qualify being dharane now.
OU812 Posted on 01-Aug-03 12:31 PM

GF to Hawaii? Now thats a thought. Heard it's such a beautiful place, that locals name everything twice. I would love to take MoonMoon sen's daughter to Pago Pago for a little tete-a-tete, eat BBq mahi-mahi , drink Passion Chi Chi. But I am afraid I will contract beriberi.

Wakiki .... heheheh funny name, beats Adhuwa Pool on the way to Damak. Maybe we should name our pools Adhuwa Adhuwa, Budhi Budhi Khola.

sangam Posted on 01-Aug-03 12:58 PM

Tulip,

Bajeko hotel used to be close to purano Balika school at Chatra Line (close to Singhadevi chowk). They had a chiya named after Balika school, Balica chiya. A glass of chiya made with half of "CHAALI" and half of regular chiya.

Radha sir used to be an owner of a pharmacy infront of the old hosital, north of Chata Chowk, and was a teacher at Public High School.

Kaag is someone from Bijaypur, who used to dress up in black and shout "kaag, kaag".

Rocky bro is from Dharan-4. I am sure you seen him, if you did your schooling in SBS. He was elected as a ward member from Dharan-4.

I hope this may help you recall them, if not, you need not worry about it. You are still a DHARANE at heart, thats what matters the most, right?
vivid Posted on 01-Aug-03 01:19 PM

Tulip,
Don't worry. We can come up with our own reasons for being a Dharane, wat u think?
Kaag is the guy who was the original version of MIB, a walking advertisement with a loudspeaker made out of tin, :) All those who didn't understand him were aliens to him and he didn't need those shining shoes, barefooted he remains till he wins the election re.

Milan dai,
The idea of Tug of War is just great, ;) why not send the msg via charchareko lahara to the local authorities, :P

OU812,
The cargo container full of Vit. B. is on its way, hope it reaches you before you contact beriberi, :D
Nice nice to to see see U U ! !
:)
vivid Posted on 01-Aug-03 01:26 PM

Sangam,
Never had the opportunity to drink that Balika chiya, :( or was it only for guys?

Rocky, the ward member of dharan-4? he who never leaves his black specs ho??

Shyam dai ko pasal Bijaypur danda ma ho??
Tulip Posted on 01-Aug-03 01:49 PM

Shaym dai ko pasal SBS agadi, usko chora pani sbs padhthyo..naam birse. bajeko chiya kaile khaiyena. baru hattisar ko chiya pasale ko naam yaad aaena. samosa ra chiya khhub khaiya thyo. bhaigo, aba kaag ra rocky dai, radha sir lai chai samjhina sakina :P

hamro thapa sir kata ho?? I heard mitra miss ko bhai ke re naam, he passed away. I think I have alzhiemer's disease :(
Bhunte Posted on 01-Aug-03 01:54 PM

Oh about 280 posts alread...Dharan ma manchhe ko kami chhaina jasto chha...Most prolific town of Nepal? ...eheheh
vivid Posted on 01-Aug-03 02:10 PM

Tulip,
The chiya pasals at Bijaypur danda, dayan pande hola kyara bayan kamal ( physical lab ko) daiko hola kyare. Kamal dai ko ma ta afno lunch nai bhane pani huncha karib 2 yrs samma ta tyeha ko samosa+chiya+sanpapri, Used to eat those sanpapri peeling layer by layer. :)

Khai Thapa sir Damak tira holan, not sure kata kata sune jasto lagcha,
Who is Mitra miss?
Damn, Tulip I think I also have that disease with that funny name, :P
sangam Posted on 01-Aug-03 02:31 PM

Oh! Mitra miss!!!! Thanks Tulip for reminding me of her. She was nice as well as very strict. How could I forget her distributing those "vitamin mithai" in her friday classess? Where is she nowdays? As far as I recall, her brother's name was Jiwan. Jiwan dai, if I am not mistaken, he was in first SLC batch out of SBS. There are few that I remember who were in first batch: Prabhakar dai,....... now I can't recall others name. Only batch with 100% slc result... jasto lagcha.
Tulip Posted on 01-Aug-03 02:40 PM

No, mitra miss had another brother who used to teach us too (I am blank!!). He was an alcoholic later and died, Mitra miss told me. He had good personality with mustache. Who can forget mitra miss ko duster ko hirkai and home science classes. hehe.
SBS ko first batch kun sal ko ho?
rai Posted on 01-Aug-03 02:45 PM

Tulip:

If you are talking about Mitra Miss 's Bhai who used to teach English .. well his name is Asis Sir . Kasari bisrsanu yaar tyo sir ko naam.. Tyo sir ko ta Deodorant ko scent samet yaad chha bhanya..Class nai ganaune garera deo use garnuhunthoy ta.. He was terror ni... ( may his soul rest in peace) . If you havent done homework of Asis Sir then only 5-6 layers of halfpants inside the uniform MIGHT work as prevention..

OU812 Posted on 01-Aug-03 02:50 PM

Mitra Miss. Her dream was to return back to her home by the river of Hoogly and lie for eternity in the bed of Holy Ganga. She fulfilled her dreams in 1988 (Not sure of the date)

Mitra Miss's brother Ashis Mitra killed in Hit and Run accident in KTM.

Kumar Sir (Account dept) die under mysterious circumstances.

End is Nigh
sangam Posted on 01-Aug-03 02:56 PM

Now, I am lost. Asis ki Jiwan. Anyway, the one I was talking about was also an alcoholic and in drugs. Skinny guy with mustache. I can still recall his face.

Miss Mitra was our class teacher when I was in class 3 or 4. So, no home science class there.

Tulip, sorry I don't recall the year. OU812 can help us out on this one.

Dipak sirko kutai kas kas le bheteko cha (tohlai thik parchu bhandai) ani Ganga sirko gaali? :-)
vivid Posted on 01-Aug-03 03:40 PM

Now! now!
Here, I'm feeling out of place. Never heard about Mitra miss and home science classes.
Asis didn't ring a bell either.
Heard about Kumar sir's untimely demise.
Is it 2036 the first batch of SBS, If not please do correct me OU812. Heard that Suresh Subba was from the first batch and he used to teach us Optional maths.
Ganga sir ko kutai ta hoina jhagada chain khub garinthiyo, ke ke lekhna lagaune ani prize dinchu bhanera nadine, kya ris uthne ni afulai ta.

Who's gonna have the honour of "Crashing" Sajhaland?

Due to database access limitations, that could cause server crashes, we will be restricting postings to a maximum of 300 per thread

vivid Posted on 02-Aug-03 04:58 PM

Who can that be, ;) was just waiting for this wonderful moment, heh! heh!
THANKS to all those who had participated to drag this thread to its ultimate length.
